• The Short Story: The No. 14 Johns Hopkins volleyball team rallied from down 1-0 and 2-1 to defeat Eastern in a thrilling five-set match on the road on Friday night at the Eastern Quad Meet.
How it Happened
SET 1
• Neither team was able to grab much of a lead in the opening set as the teams stayed close throughout the opening points.
• Trailing 10-8 the Blue Jays scored the next three points to take an 11-10 lead, but the Eagles responded, scoring the next two points to pull ahead 12-11.
• A kill from
Louisa Kishton and an attacking error on Eastern put Hopkins back in the lead by a score of 13-12.
•
Nicole Hada put Johns Hopkins up 20-19 with an ace, but the home team scored the next six points to win the opening set 25-20.
SET 2
• JHU opened the second set on a 4-0 run before a kill from Sarah Roberts ended the Blue Jay scoring streak.
• Trailing 7-2, the Eagles scored six unanswered points to take an 8-7 lead, but JHU responded with a 6-0 run of its own to regains the lead at 13-8.
• Three straight points brought the Eagles to within four at 18-14, but Hopkins scored seven of the next ten points, capped by a kill from
Eleni Panagopoulos, to tie the match with a 25-17 set two win.
SET 3
• Johns Hopkins scored five of the first six points to open the third set, but Eastern scored five straight points to take a 6-5 lead.
• A kill from
Simone Bliss ended the Eagles scoring run and tied the set at six, but Eastern scored the next two points to regain the lead.
• A 4-1 run by the Blue Jays later in the set brought the score to 14 all and the two teams remained within a point of each other before two-straight Eastern points put them ahead 19-17.
• JHU went on a 3-0 run capped by a Hada kill to go ahead 20-19, but Eastern scored five of the next seven points to get to set point.
• Kills from
Michelle Abt and Bliss tied the set at 24 but a kill from Caroline Shelby put the Eagles ahead by one.
• A kill from Bliss and a bad set from Eastern put JHU back up one, however, the home team scored the next two points to take a 27-26 lead.
• Bliss once again had a big kill to tie the match, but Eastern scored the next two points to win a thrilling third set, 29-27.
SET 4
• A 5-1 run by Johns Hopkins put the Blue Jays ahead 7-4 and back-to-back kills from
Lauren Anthony and Kishton gave JHU a 9-5 advantage.
• Hopkins scored nine straight points to extend its lead to 19-6 and the Blue Jays went on to take the set 25-11 to force a fifth and final set.
SET 5
• Eastern pulled ahead 7-3 in the set forcing a JHU timeout, and out of the timeout, Hopkins scored four straight points, punctuated by back-to-back kills from Kishton to tie the set at seven.
• The Eagles scored three straight points to pull ahead 11-9, however, the Blue Jays responded with a 4-0 run of their own to go up 13-11.
• Two service errors on Eastern gave the Blue Jays the 15-13 victory as Hopkins remains unbeaten this season.
What it Means
• The Blue Jays are 3-8 all-time against the Eagles and have won the last two matches.
• The 8-0 start is the best start to open a season since 2012 when Hopkins won the first 16 matches of the season.
Inside the Box Score
• Kishton registered her third straight double-double as she led the team with 21 kills and 17 digs.
Esther Hong also added a season-high 17 digs in the match.
• Bliss finished with 17 kills and added three blocks in the game.
• Anthony led Hopkins with seven blocks.
• Hada set a new career-high with 51 assists in the match. She now has 217 assists on the season.
