Volleyball Extends Winning Streak to 12 with a 3-0 Victory Over Stevenson

The Basics

• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins volleyball team extended its season-opening winning streak to 12 as the Blue Jays defeated visiting Stevenson, 3-0 on Thursday night at Goldfarb Gym.

How it Happened

SET 1
• The Blue Jays opened up with a quick 4-1 lead on back-to-back kills from Simone Bliss.
• Stevenson tied the match at six off back-to-back JHU attack errors, however a kill from Micaelle Larrieux put Hopkins back in the lead at 7-6.
Michelle Abt accounted for four straight Hopkins points, including three consecutive aces to give the home team a 12-7 lead.
• A 5-0 run increased the JHU lead to 17-8 before a kill Victoria Prokic stopped the Hopkins run and made the score 17-9. The Blue Jays then went on a 6-0 run on the serve of Sarah Khan to go up 23-9.
• With Hopkins having set point, the Mustangs went on a 4-0 run to make the score 24-14, but a kill from Larrieux gave the Blue Jays the set one victory by a score of 25-14.

SET 2
• 
Set two went back-and-forth in the early portion with neither team being able to get out to more than a two-point lead.
• Trailing 10-7, Hopkins scored seven unanswered points to take a 14-10 lead which was punctuated by a Larrieux kill.
• Stevenson got the JHU lead down to a point on a kill from Darian Hileman to make the score 14-13, but the Blue Jays responded, scoring five of the next seven points to take a 19-15 lead.
• Back-to-back kills from Larrieux sealed the 25-21 set two victory for Johns Hopkins.  

SET 3
JHU doubled-up the Mustangs in the early portion of set three, pulling out to an 8-4 lead to force a Stevenson timeout.
• The Blue Jays continued to roll out of the timeout, pulling ahead by nine on a kill from Bliss which made the score 18-9.
• Stevenson put together a 3-0 run to get to within six at 18-12. Hopkins then scored seven of the match's final 11 points to seal the 25-16 set three victory.

What it Means
• The Blue Jays last regular season loss came on October 19 against Stevenson. The Mustangs were also the last team to defeat the Blue Jays at Goldfarb, claiming a 3-1 victory on October 26, 2016.
• With the win, JHU has now won its first 12 matches to open the season, which is four away from tying the program record for consecutive victories to open the season (16 in 2012).
• The Blue Jays lead the all-time series 10-8 and have won the last two meetings.

Inside the Box Score
• Larrieux led Hopkins with 12 kills followed by Bliss with 10.
• Bliss had five blocks in the match while Lauren Anthony finished with a team-leading six as JHU finished the match with 18.
• Khan had a match-high 26 assists and also added 11 digs.  Abt finished with a team-best 12 digs while Esther Hong added 10 digs.
