Women's Soccer Falls in Top-10 Matchup to Messiah, 3-0

The Blue Jays Suffered their First Loss of the Season

The Basics

• The Short Story: In a matchup of top-10 teams, it was fifth-ranked Messiah that came away with the 3-0 victory over the sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team on Wednesday night.

How it Happened
• The Falcons struck first with a goal off a corner kick by Sunny Gelnovatch. The ball deflected off the crossbar and found Barb Foster for the goal at 2:05.
• Mizuho Obayashi applied nice pressure throughout the first half, helping to keep the score close even with many potential scoring chances for the home team.
• In the 30th minute, Robyn Lipschultz came out of the net and made a great diving save on the shot by Maddie Kohl.
• Messiah increased its lead to 2-0 at 17:48 as Kohl's shot went off the post and came right back to Emily Lockwood who put the ball past the diving Lipschultz.
• Lilly Shover took a shot off a corner kick at 43:37 and Katie Whittington made a great defensive save to keep the score 2-0 in favor of Messiah.
• The Blue Jay offense got going in the second half, getting multiple shots off within the first ten minutes of the second half. The best JHU opportunity came off a free kick from Maggie Coulson, but her shot was turned away from Falcons' keeper, Sarah Yunez.
• Messiah got its third goal of the game at 77:30 as Emily D'Amico took a pass from Brooke Firestone and put the ball past Lipschultz as the Falcons took the contest, 3-0.

• JHU is 3-11-2 all-time against the Falcons.
