Volleyball Defeats NYU and York at Spartan Invitational

The Blue Jays went 4-0 at the Spartan Invitational

NYU MATCH

The Basics 
• Score: Johns Hopkins – 3 • NYU – 0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-14)
• Records: Johns Hopkins (4-0) • NYU (4-3)
• Location: York, PA • Wolf Gym
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins volleyball team continued its winning ways as the Blue Jays defeated NYU, 3-0, on the second day of the Spartan Invitational.

How it Happened
• The two teams played a close first set with neither team able to pull ahead by more than a few points. Hopkins finally pulled ahead by a score of 9-5, but the Violets rallied to make the score 12-10. The Blue Jays scored the next four points to go up 14-10 and went on to take the first set by a 25-14 score.
• NYU took a 3-1 lead in the second set, however, JHU scored the next six points to take a 7-3 lead. The Violets put together some small rallies but they couldn't close the gap as Johns Hopkins won set two, 25-17.
• JHU took an 8-5 lead in the third, but the Violets eventually got to within one at 9-8. Hopkins then scored the next three points to take a 12-8 lead and proceeded to outscore NYU 13-5 to win the set 25-14 and sweep the match.

Inside the Box Score
• Louisa Kishton recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Her 10 kills led the team and the 12 digs tied for the team lead with Michelle Abt.
• Senior Esther Hong had 11 digs in the match while freshman Sarah Khan had 10.

YORK MATCH

The Basics 
• Score: JHU – 3 • York – 2 (25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 15-8)
• Records: JHU (5-0) • York (3-3)
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins volleyball dropped its first set of the season, but Hopkins was able to take a thrilling five-set match from York to wrap up the Spartan Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record.

How it Happened
• In the first set, Hopkins pulled ahead early, but York battled back and got to within one point at 12-11. JHU then went on to outscore the Spartans, 6-2 to take an 18-13 lead. York came back once again and got to within one at 24-23, but the Blue Jays converted set point to win set number one, 25-23.
• Set two saw JHU take a 13-11 advantage, but York eventually pulled ahead 19-18. Hopkins then four-straight points to regain the lead at 22-19. York scored the next two points to make it a one-point set, but the Blue Jays scored the next two points to win set two by a score of 25-22.
• Just like the previous two sets, set three was close early before the Spartans were able to score seven consecutive points to take a 16-10 lead. Johns Hopkins eventually pulled to within one at 19-18, but York scored the next two points and became the first team to win a set against JHU this season as the Spartans won the third set, 25-22.
• York controlled the fourth set pulling out to leads of 14-7 and 16-11, but Hopkins eventually got the lead down to two points at 20-18. The Spartans held on and took set four, 25-20 to force a decisive fifth set.
• Playing in their first five-set match since falling to Swarthmore in the Sweet 16 last season, Hopkins was able to regroup after dropping sets three and four as JHU took the final set 15-8 to claim a thrilling five-set win.

Inside the Box Score
•
Kishton once again recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 26 digs. The junior finished one dig shy of tying her career high for digs in a match.
• Nicole Hada set a new career-high with 30 assists in the match. She has 98 assists already this season.
• Abt (11), and Hong (16) also recorded double-digit digs in the match.
• Eleni Panagopoulos and Morgan Wu each had nine kills in the match.

What it Means
• The Blue Jays are 5-6 all-time against the Violets. This is the first meeting between the teams since the 2006 season and NYU had won the previous four meetings.
• Against the Spartans, Hopkins improves to 7-6 all-time as the Blue Jays have won the last three meetings.
• The five-set win was the first for the Blue Jays since they defeated Swarthmore last season on October 17th.

• Hopkins is back on the court on Friday, September 14 as the Blue Jays head to Randolph-Macon for a 5pm match.
