BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins Director of Athletics
Alanna W. Shanahan announced an initiative today to name the head football coaching position at the school after late coach
Jim Margraff. The campaign for the "
Jim Margraff Endowment for Hopkins Football" will begin immediately.
Â
The
Jim Margraff Endowment for Hopkins Football is designed to not only honor the legacy of the greatest coach in program history, but also provide the support necessary to provide a first-class student-athlete experience and for the team to continue competing at the high national level in which Margraff elevated it to in recent years.
Â
In addition to naming the head coaching position after Margraff, a committee of former players, teammates and university administrators has been established to develop a recognition display for Margraff in the Newton White Athletic Center or Homewood Field. Donations and support for that may also be made through the
Jim Margraff Endowment for Hopkins Football.
Â
Margraff passed away on January 2, less than one month after he finished his 29
th season as the head football coach at Johns Hopkins; he ended the 2018 season with a career record of 221-89-3 (.711). Margraff is the winningest coach in Johns Hopkins and Centennial Conference history and his 221 wins are also the most of any college football coach in Maryland state history. Among active Division III head coaches, he ranked third in career wins at the conclusion of the 2018 season, when he was named the Division III National Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association and D3football.com.
