Blue Jays continue historic season, sweep Gettysburg for 26th straight win

The Basics
• Score: #7 Johns Hopkins – 3 • Gettysburg – 0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-11)

• Records: #7 Johns Hopkins (26-0, 9-0 Centennial) • Gettysburg – (13-12, 4-5 Centennial)
• Location: Gettysburg, PA • Bream Gymnasium
• The Short Story: The seventh-ranked Hopkins volleyball team matched the second-longest winning streak in Centennial Conference history Wednesday night with a three-set victory over Gettysburg.

How it Happened

SET ONE
As they've seemingly done all season, the Blue Jays ran out to an early 5-0 lead to open the match behind the serve of Natalie Aston. Hannah Korslund added a pair of kills during the scoring spree, but Gettysburg would answer with three of the next four points to trim the lead to 6-3.

• A Louisa Kishton kill pushed the Hopkins advantage to 8-5, and Lauren Anthony followed with a kill from the middle to put the Blue Jays back up by four. The Bullets would rally again to score the next three points, until Anthony and Aston stopped the rally with a block on a swing from Allie Stranick.

• Gettysburg took its first lead of the opening game following a kill from Shannon Fletcher to put the Bullets ahead 13-12 and force a timeout from Blue Jay head coach Matt Troy. Simone Bliss tallied a kill out of the timeout to even the score at 13-13 and spark what would turn into a 5-0 Blue Jay run to retake a 17-13.

• That advantage would prove to be enough for the Jays as they would ultimately run away with the first frame 25-17, capped by another Kishton kill from the left side.

SET TWO
• The two sides exchanged the first six points of the second set. Gettysburg then strung together four unanswered to take a 7-3 lead, their largest lead of the night to that point. It would then be Hopkins to go on a run, as the Jays scored ten of the next 11 points to bust open a 13-8 advantage, forcing a Gettysburg timeout.
• After Gettysburg cut the Jays' lead to 14-13, Bliss went off a block from the left side to extend the lead to two, but back-to-back kills from the Bullets would even the score again at 15-15 where it would be a back-and-forth remainder of the set.

• Neither side would lead by more than a point for the rest of the second game, until Bliss scored to give Hopkins set point at 24-23, and capped off a long rally with a floater from the left side to close out a tough second set.

SET THREE
• After a stressful second game, Hopkins jumped out to 4-0 lead to start the third following back-to-back kills from Aston and an ace from Anthony.
• The lead would grow to 11-4 after kills from Anthony and Eleni Panagopoulos. A Sarah Ellis kill trimmed Gettysburg's deficit to 14-10, but that would be as close as the score would get.

• Bliss tacked on two of her team-high 16 kills balloon the lead to 16-10, and Aston followed consecutive Bullet attacking errors with two more kills to extend the lead to 20-10. Bliss would eventually finish off the win on match point with her game-high 16th kill.

Inside the Box Score
• Hopkins continued its historic efficiency on the offensive ends. Owners of the nation's second-highest team hitting percentage (.309), the Blue Jays once again eclipsed the .300 mark, finishing the night hitting .352. It was the 17th time this season the Blue Jays have hit at least .300 as a team. At this rate, they will almost assuredly set a new program record for hitting percentage, currently held by the 2017 Blue Jay squad (.257).
• Aston finished the night with 20 digs, two shy of her career-high and a new career-best for a three-set match.

What it Means

• Wednesday night marked the 11th-consecutive victory for the Blue Jays over the Bullets dating back to 2010. Gettysburg still leads the overall series between the two programs 29-17.
• With the win, Hopkins improves to 26-0, matching the second longest winning-streak in Centennial Conference volleyball history. Gettysburg had won 26-straight matches in 1995 and 1996, and the Bullets also hold the conference's longest unbeaten streak at 27, set back in 2003. Hopkins will have an opportunity to match that streak on Saturday when they take on Franklin & Marshall in the season finale.
• The Blue Jays have still yet to drop a set to a Centennial Conference opponent this season.

Up Next
Hopkins will celebrate its two seniors in Saturday's regular season finale Senior Day matchup against Franklin & Marshall. The Blue Jays and Diplomats each enter the final match of the season at 9-0 in the conference, and will battle for the regular season title and right to host the Centennial Conference tournament. The Jays will look to avenge last season's five-set defeat to the Diplomats.
