Oden's Outburst Not Enough To Lead Blue Jays Past Garnet

The Sophomore Matched Her Career-High With 27 Points

• Records: JHU (5-4, 3-2 Centennial) • Swarthmore (4-4, 2-2 Centennial)

How it Happened
Johns Hopkins couldn't overcome a slow offensive first half, falling to Swarthmore 46-44 on Tuesday night, their first loss to the Garnet since 2014.

After an early first quarter burst, the Blue Jays went nearly 14 minutes without a point, falling behind 16-9 before Emily Howie connected on her second three of the contest with 1:07 remaining in the half. The Garnet scored just eight points in the second quarter, but held Hopkins to three, taking an 18-12 lead into halftime. Swarthmore was outshot by ten in the half, but JHU shot just 4-32 from the field in the first 20 minutes.

After sitting for much of the second quarter with two fouls, Diarra Oden led a second-half charge, scoring 21 of her 27 points after the break. Johns Hopkins cut the deficit to just two points on five separate occasions in the final five minutes, but the Garnet did just enough to hold off the Blue Jays. Dana Bandurick scored six of her team-best 23 points in the fourth quarter to help stave off off the Blue Jays late run.

Hopkins kept it close for the entirety of the game, but never led after Swarthmore took a 10-9 lead late in the first quarter. The Garnet never led by more than nine, but held the lead for 33 of the 40 minutes in the contest.
