The Short Story: Undefeated and eighth-ranked Michigan got a game-high six goals from Caitlin Muir to hand the 18
th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team a 16-11 loss in Big Ten action Saturday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
• Hopkins jumped out to a 4-1 lead by the midway point of the first half with goals from four different Blue Jays. Sophomore
Shelby Harrison opened the scoring with a free position goal at the 26:57-mark. Senior
Miranda Ibello then slipped a pass to junior
Maggie Schneidereith, she ducked under her defender and scored on a low sidearm shot.
• Nadine Stewart answered with a goal right off the draw as the Wolverines cut the lead in half at 21:41. The Blue Jays answered with back-to-back goals from sophomore
Aurora Cordingley and junior
Lexi Souder and Hopkins lead was 4-1 with 15:45 to play in the half.
• Chandler Kirby made it a two-goal game when she scored off the dodge at 13:27. Three minutes later, senior
Nicole DeMase dodged from behind the cage, dipped inside her defender and scored from in-tight with 13 seconds left on the possession clock to stake Hopkins to a 5-2 lead.
• Caitlin Muir scored off the dodge with 7:41 to play to spark a five-goal Michigan run that bridged halftime and gave the home team a 7-5 lead. Muir fueled the run with three of the five goals, including the go-ahead goal with 14.8 seconds to go in the first half.
• Harrison ended the run, and snapped a scoreless drought of more than 15 minutes for the Blue Jays, with her second of the game at 25:14. She dodged down the right alley, spun on her defender and blew a left-handed shot home to pull the Blue Jays within one. The teams would then trade goals over a seven-minute span and Michigan led 9-8 with 16 minutes to play.
• Kane scored back-to-back goals just 38 seconds apart and just like that the lead was three. The Blue Jays pulled back within two with a transition goal at the 12:00-mark. Redshirt senior
Ellie McNulty caused a turnover on the defensive end and some tic-tac-toe passing led to a Schneidereith goal on the doorstep.
• Michigan responded with five goals in seven minutes to push out to a 16-9 lead with 3:43 still to play. Cordingley ended the run with a free position goal just 29 seconds later. Ibello then took a feed from DeMase, who had drawn a free position shot, and scored from in tight with just 41.3 seconds remaining.
