Johns Hopkins Downs Washington & Jefferson in NCAA First Round

• The Short Story: The 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team cruised to a 5-0 win over Washington & Jefferson on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
 
How it Happened
• The Blue Jays jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a doubles' sweep and then earned two quick singles' wins to earn the win.
• Sophomore Vishnu Joshi and junior Vik Vasan did not drop a game against Ruchir Gupta and Josh Hnat as they grabbed the first point of the match. Junior Aaron Carey and senior Scott Thygesen then beat Stephen Mehlbaum and Max Perilstein, 8-3, at second. Juniors Joe Cartledge and Austin Gu completed the doubles' sweep with an 8-4 win over Sam Bellini and Nate Wang at first.
• In singles, Carey was the first to finish as he blanked Hnat 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles. Cartledge then matched his feat in his win over Hartman at third, sending the Blue Jays to the second round.
 
What it Means
• Today's match was the first meeting between the Blue Jays and the Presidents since the late 1920s.
• Thygesen picked up his 49th career doubles win and is now tied for 16th in program history. He is also tied for 21st with 72 combined wins.
 
Up Next
• Hopkins will take on 11th-ranked Kenyon on Saturday at 2:00 pm at the JHU Tennis Courts.
