BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins men's basketball assistant coach Ricky Hernandez has been named one of the top Division III Assistants in the nation by the Minority Coaches Association (MCA) it was announced Monday.
 
Hernandez is in this third season with the Blue Jays after coaching stints at Moravian and East Stroudsburg. In two years at Homewood, he has helped Hopkins to a 42-13 (.764) record, including a 30-6 (.833) mark in the Centennial Conference. JHU won the Centennial Conference Championship in 2019-20 and hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Hernandez has coached three All-Centennial Conference selections, including the 2020 Centennial Conference Player of the Year and the program's first-ever First Team All-American (Conner Delaney). 
 
In addition to his coaching duties, Hernandez is a member of the JHU Athletic Department's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Team. The team, which includes senior administrators, head coaches, assistant coaches and staff members, was created in the summer of 2020. Ensuring that black student-athletes and employees can share their experience and help others understand those experiences will be an on-going initiative that the DEI team leads. The team will also develop programming and educational opportunities for student-athletes, coaches and staff in the areas of LGBTQ Life, Multicultural Affairs and Religious and Spiritual Life to name a few.
 
In his time in Bethlehem, Hernandez helped Moravian to 39 wins, a pair of Landmark Conference regular season championships, the 2018 Landmark Conference tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. He coached four all-conference selections as well as one D3hoops All-Mid-Atlantic honoree. While at East Stroudsburg, Hernandez coached two Honorable Mention All-Americans as well as three All-PSAC players and helped the Warriors to the 2015 PSAC East Championship.
