The Short Story: Junior
Kathleen Garvey hit
Maggie Schneiderieth with a 70-yard outlet pass and the senior scored as time expired to lift the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team to a 15-14 win over host and 25
th-ranked Georgetown Wednesday afternoon. Â
Â
How it Happened
Hopkins seemed to be headed to its second straight win in the series, but Georgetown had other ideas. The Hoyas scored three goals in a three-minute span to tie the game at 14 with 37.4 seconds left. GU then won the draw and Mary Pagano got a shot off in traffic but Garvey made the save and controlled the ball. She cradled once and then found Schneidereith in stride 70 yards down field. Schneidereith cut back on her defender, switched hands and scored on a low right-handed shot at the buzzer.
Schneidereith gave the Blue Jays the early lead with a free position goal just 2:38 into the game. The Hoyas answered with goals from Emily Ehle and Ali Diamond to take a 2-1 lead with 19:24 to play. Senior
Mackenzie Heldeberg and junior
Aurora Cordingley connected on back-to-back goals less than three minutes apart to swing the lead back to Hopkins midway through the half.
Just 26 second later, the score was knotted at three on Ehle's second of the afternoon. Michaela Bruno then scored on the run in the right alley to put Georgetown up 4-3. Freshman
Carly Steinlauf answered with a high-to-low shot in the right alley to tie the game.
The Hoyas retook the lead on an Annabelle Albert unassisted tally at the 7:22-mark. But it was short-lived. Junior
Shelby Harrison picked up a loose ball, blew past her defender and picked the far post. Just 63 seconds later, Cordingley dodged from behind, tip-toed the crease and scored from in-tight to stake the Blue Jays to a 6-5 lead. Natalia Lynch scored off the dodge to tie the game again, but Cordingley dodged, slipped inside her defender and scored from the doorstep to send Hopkins into the half with a 7-6 lead.
The teams traded goals over the opening five minutes and the Blue Jays led 9-8. Schneidereith then scored on a high-to-low shot off the Heldberg helper to spark a three-goal Hopkins run that staked the visitors to a 12-8 lead with 16:40 to play. Lynch and junior
Keegan Barger traded goals and JHU led 13-9 just over four minutes later. Diamond then scored back-to-back goals just 28 seconds apart to ignite a 5-1 Hoya run that tied the game with 37.4 seconds to play. Â
