The Short Story: The top-ranked Johns Hopkins volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday at Muhlenberg as the Blue Jays topped the host Mules in four sets and swept past Clarkson to improve to 22-0 on the year.
How it Happened - Muhlenberg
• The Blue Jays used decisive first and third-set wins (25-10, 25-5) and a six-point win in set four to pick up the victory against the Mules.
\• Johns Hopkins built a 15-3 lead in the first set that was fueled by an early 8-0 run to cruise to the 15-point set victory. The Blue Jays hit .308 in the set and held the Mules to -.067 hitting percentage to grab the 1-0 lead.
• The Mules fought back in the second set and used a seven-point run to turn an early 7-5 deficit into a 12-7 lead that they never relinquished. The Blue Jays got as close as 20-17, but Muhlenberg tallied five of the last seven points to even the match.
• Tied at 2-2 in the third, the Blue Jays grabbed the lead for good on an
Eleni Panagopoulos kill and that point ignited a stunning 18-1 run that gave Hopkins a 20-3 lead. Freshman
Evelyn Batista was at the service line for the final 12 of those points and served up four aces during the run.
• Hopkins closed out the win with the 25-19 fourth-set victory. The Blue Jays jumped to an early 5-1 advantage with three points off the serve of freshman
Roxy Karrer fueling the surge.
• The Mules were even at 7-7 after a Blue Jay attack error in the fourth set, but a quick 5-0 run that
Danielle Norman ignited with an ace gave the Blue Jays what proved to be an insurmountable 12-7 lead. Muhlenberg pulled within two at 16-14 and were within three several times down the stretch before the Blue Jays closed out the win on a
Sydney Portale kill.
How it Happened - Clarkson
• Johns Hopkins used a decisive run in each set to earn the sweep of the Golden Knights with each set decided by at least 10 points.
• The Blue Jays trailed 4-2 in set one before a Portale kill ignited a 11-point run that gave the Blue Jays a 13-4 lead. Senior Sarah Kahn handled things at the service line during the run and Portale had three kills during the spree. Clarkson was never closer than six after the Blue Jays built the 13-4 cushion.
• The second set run for the Blue Jays came later than it had in the first as the Golden Knights stayed within striking distance until the middle of the set. Johns Hopkins led just 13-11 before back-to-back kills from Portale, a service ace from Kahn and a Clarkson attack error pushed the lead to 17-11.
• The 'Knights were within four at 17-13 and later held serve down 21-16, but the Blue Jays scored the final four points of the set with a Portale kill polishing things off in the second set.
• Any hopes for a Clarkson rally were dashed early in the third set. Tied at 2-2, the Blue Jays used a block from Panagopoulos and Portale to ignite a 13-1 run that all but put the set away. Kahn and Batista were at the service line during the run and senior
Lauren Anthony collected five kills to lead the way. The Blue Jays were up by as many as 15 at 22-7 before closing things out at 25-15.
