An Even 50 - Blue Jays Top Gettysburg (3-1) for 50th Straight Victory

Hopkins Rallies Past Bullets to Extend Winning Streak

The Basics
• Score: #1 Johns Hopkins-3 • Gettysburg-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-21)
• Records: #1 Johns Hopkins (15-0, 4-0 CC) • Gettysburg (8-7, 1-3 CC)
• Location: Gettysburg, PA • Bream Gymnasium
• The Short Story: After dropping the first set, the top-ranked Johns Hopkins volleyball team ran its season-opening winning streak to 15 and its overall winning streak to 50 with a 3-1 win at Gettysburg Wednesday evening.  The 50-match winning streak is just the seventh in all divisions of NCAA Women's Volleyball.

How it Happened

SET ONE
• The Bullets spurted early and late to claim set one (25-23) and end a Blue Jay streak of 51 consecutive sets won against Centennial Conference opponents.

• After spotting the Blue Jays an early 2-0 lead, the Bullets responded by scoring nine of the next 12 points to grab an early 9-5 lead and force a Blue Jay timeout after reeling off four consecutive points to turn a 5-5 tie into the four-point lead.  Back-to-back kills from Kylie Ulrich and a Blue Jay attack error accounted for the final three points of the run for Gettysburg.

• The Blue Jays rallied after the timeout and pulled even at 11 after an ace from freshman Roxy Karrer and an attack error by Ulrich.  Johns Hopkins stretched out to three-point leads at 15-12 and 16-13 before the Bullets forced ties at 16, 17, 18 and 19.

• Johns Hopkins had a chance to put the set away late as the Jays grabbed their last two-point lead at 23-21 on another attack error by the Bullets, but Gettysburg scored the final four points of the set and got the final point on the Blue Jay attack error.

SET TWO
• Johns Hopkins took control early in set two and never trailed in posting a 25-15 victory.  The Blue Jays jumped out to a 5-2 lead, let the Bullets get within two just twice after that (5-3, 7-5) and led by as many as 10.

• The Bullets were within 11-7 and held serve before back-to-back kills from Danielle Norman and Sydney Portale ignited an 11-4 spurt that effectively put the set away.  The run was highlighted by three kills each from Portale and Elayna Williams and two of the final three Hopkins points in the set came off the hand of Norman.

SET THREE
• Like they had in set two, the Blue Jays took control early in set three as they used a lightning-quick 11-4 run to open the set and cruised to a 25-19 win.

• It was the hitting of Williams and Norman that fueled the set-opening spurt for the Blue Jays as each collected three kills as Hopkins scored 11 of the first 15 points in the set.

• The Blue Jays maintained at least a six-point lead until the Bullets got consecutive kills from Ingrid Bayer and Ulrich to make it 16-11, but two service errors and three attack errors by Gettysburg helped the Blue Jays push out to a 21-13 lead and late kills by Portale and Williams helped salt away the third-set win for Johns Hopkins.

SET FOUR
• The Blue Jays matched their set three opening by scoring 11 of the first 15 points to grab an 11-4 lead with three Norman kills leading the way early.

• Hopkins still led by seven at 14-7 before Gettysburg used a 10-3 run to pull even at 17.  The Bullets used three kills from Zanze Kuba-McCoy early in the spurt and a service error and consecutive Blue Jay attack errors to pull even.

• Lauren Anthony then bookended a 4-1 Blue Jay run with kills of her own to make it 21-18 only to have the Bullets pull within one on two occasions at 21-20 and 22-21.  Portale then wrapped kills around an error from Kuba-McCoy to end the match and extend the Blue Jay winning streak.

What it Means
• Johns Hopkins' 50-match winning streak is just the fourth winning streak of 50 or more matches in NCAA Division III history.  The Blue Jays are now one win shy of tying Bates (1988-90) for the third-longest Division III winning streak.

• The 50-match winning streak is just the seventh such streak in NCAA Women's Volleyball history.  Penn State holds the record with a 109-match winning streak from 2007-10.  There have been four Division III winning streaks of 50 matches or more, two at the Division I level and one at the Division II level.

Inside the Box Score
• Norman (18), Portale (15) and Williams (13) led the Blue Jays offensively as they collected 46 of the Blue Jays' 57 kills in the win.

• Anthony added six kills and was in on seven blocks, while Natalie Aston had 54 assists and had a hand in five blocks on the night.  Freshman Evelyn Batista had a team-high 18 digs.

• Kuba-McCoy had a team-high 14 kills and added 16 digs and Ulrich added 10 kills, but Gettysburg hit just .121 for the night and never led in the final three sets after winning the first.
