The Short Story: Sophomore
Paul Gensbigler scored as time expired to lift the Johns Hopkins water polo team to a thrilling 13-12 win at Mount St. Mary's Friday night.
Â
How it Happened
• The Mount grabbed a 2-1 lead after the first quarter and scored the first two of the second to push out to a 4-1 lead with 4:48 to play in the half. Sophomore
Liam Housenbold and graduate student
Olin Shipstead sandwiched goals around a strike by Kiahi Horan and Mount St. Mary's led 5-3. Jason O'Donnell had the final say of the half however, scoring at 2:32 to send the Mount into the half with a 6-3 lead.
• Hopkins came out firing in the second half. Seniors
Jayden Kunwar and
Jake Pearson, junior
Chris Freese and Gensbigler scored four straight to put the Blue Jays up 7-6 at the 3:13-mark. Mount St. Mary's ended the run with a Jaden McNeal-Villafana goal to knot the score.
• The Mount then had the chance to retake the lead when they earned a five-meter shot, but freshman
Kyle Pearson made the stop. Gensbigler then scored with 12 ticks on the clock to put JHU up 8-7 after three.
• Kunwar scored 40 seconds into the final stanza to push the Blue Jays' lead to two. The teams then swapped scores over a four-minute span and JHU led 11-9 with 3:55 to play. Back-to-back goals by Jason Fitch and Kacper Cieplik tied the game just 90 seconds later.
• Sophomore
Cameron Burns put Hopkins back on top at 1:06, but O'Donnell answered with just three seconds remaining to tie the game at 12. Gensbigler then played the hero, beating the Mount goalie to the left post to give the Blue Jays the win.
