How it Happened
The visiting Johns Hopkins women's basketball team jumped out to a 14-8 lead after the first quarter and led for more than 37 minutes in a 62-52 win at Muhlenberg in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Blue Jays used an early 10-point run to turn a two-point deficit into a lead they would never surrender. Down 4-2, the Blue Jays used a traditional three-point play from senior
Diarra Oden to jump-start the run and capped the spree with a three-pointer from
Christine Corpuz to grab a 12-4 lead late in the opening quarter.
Â
The Mules responded with a 9-2 run tht bridged the first and second quarters to pull within 14-13, and the teams played evenly for several minutes before nother Corpuz triple ignited a half-ending 9-4 spurt for Johns Hopkins that gave the Blkue Jays a 29-22 halftime lead. All nine points for Hopkins during the run came from beyond the arc as Sophie Debettencourt and Oden also hit from long range.
Â
Muhlenberg would outscore the Blue Jays 16-13 in the third quarter to make it 42-38 entering the final period and the Mules were within three at 47-44 midway through the period after back-to-back Margaux Eripret layups, but the Blue Jays would hold the Mules to just a free throw over the next three minutes and an
Emily Howie three-pointer with 2:41 on the clock gave the Blue Jays a 54-45 lead and the margin never dipped below seven down the stretch.
