How it Happened
Johns Hopkins got off to a red-hot start, leading Gettysburg by as many as 13 in the first half, but the Bullets outscored Hopkins by 11 in the second half to earn a hard-fought 67-58 victory in Goldfarb on Tuesday night.Â
Â
Trailing 11-8 after a Mackenze Szlosek bucket, Hopkins went on a 15-6 run to end the first quarter. On the next possession down,
Erin Walsh took her defender off the dribble and put it home to cut it to a one-point game. After a missed jumper from Mackenzie Tinner,
Greta Miller got it out to
Diarra Oden on the break and Oden finished to put the Blue Jays in the lead. With 3:53 remaining in the period, Tinner knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the contest at 13-13. Then the freshmen got involved for Hopkins, scoring the next 10 Blue Jay points.
Michaela O'Neil scored on a nice move in the post off a
Jadyn Murray assist. Then, the freshman stole it off of Tinner and drilled a three to put JHU ahead 18-13. With 1:41 to play in the quarter,
Natalie Mann beat her defender off the dribble and laid it in with the off-hand to give Hopkins a 20-15 lead. Leading it by three with 20 seconds to play, O'Neil went defense to offense again, rejecting Carly Rice. She fed the ball to
Emily Howie who milked the clock and then found O'Neil on the wing to knock down another triple just before the buzzer.Â
Â
JHU got off to a quick start in period two, carrying both the momentum, and the freshman scoring run with them. Mann scored the first bucket of the second, just 29 seconds in on an offensive rebound and put back. Next time down the floor, it was Mann again, this time knocking down a three with the assist given to O'Neil. That bucket made it 16 straight points from Blue Jay rookies. Oden scored back-to-back buckets for the Jays, finishing a fast break layup off a feed from Howie with 7:14 left in the half to give the Jays their biggest lead, 32-19. Caitlyn Priore scored a second-chance bucket with 4:45 in the period to get the Bullets deficit back to single digits, but Oden hit a pair of free throws and Murray laid it in off an O'Neil assist with 3:18 left, stretching the lead back to 13. However, the Bullets used an 11-0 run to end the half, getting seven points from Szlosek and four from Rice over the final 2:57.Â
Leading by just two to start the third, Walsh drew a foul and knocked down a pair of free throws to push it back to four early in the period. Christina Richson answered with a triple down the other end and the JHU lead was 38-37. With 8:10 to play in the third, Szlosek found Richson who knocked down a jumper and the Bullets took the lead at 39-38 for the first time since 11-10. With 6:53 remaining in the third, Howie hit her lone bucket of the game, knocking down a three to tie it at 41 all. After Tinner put the Bullets back ahead by one with 5:42 to play, Oden drilled a triple after a steal by Walsh and the Blue Jays led it once more, 45-43. Miller finished inside after a Murray offensive rebound with 3:47 left in the period and Hopkins' lead was four. Rice tied the game at 47-47 with a jumper in the paint and the Bullets retook the lead with 2:06 left on the third quarter clock as Richson hit a pull-up jumper. Walsh scored on a nice find from
Halie Egan with 1:06 left in the quarter, cutting the deficit to 51-49 heading to the fourth.Â
Oden tried to will her team back on top in the fourth, scoring the team's first seven points of the period and tying the contest at 56-56 with 5:33 to play. 12 seconds later, Richson knocked down a jumper off a Szlosek dish. Szlosek hit 20 points for the night, driving to the bucket after a Rice steal to push the lead to five with under four to play. Murray cut it to three after an offensive boards and a put back with 3:37 to play, but the Blue Jays' scoring ended there as the Bullets scored the final six to earn a victory by the final score of 67-58 in a game that was much closer than even the final score indicated.Â
