The Short Story: Gettysburg jumped out to a two-goal lead and went on to beat host and top-seeded Johns Hopkins, 4-1, in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Tournament Friday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
• Gettysburg grabbed the lead in the 31
st minute thanks to Connor Fife. Aidan Giquinto passed the ball out wide to Aidan Gaynor, who took one touch and then hit a hard shot from the top of the box. Graduate student
Xander LeFevre got the save but was unable to control the shot. Fife ran onto the ball and tucked it into the goal from six yards out.
• Just 11 minutes later, the Bullets held a 2-0 lead. Matt Tennant sent a long throw-in to the box. A Blue Jay defender got a foot on it, but Chase Sempervive was there to poke home the ball from in-tight.
• Hopkins cut the deficit in half in the 50
th minute with a goal from graduate student
Nate Charendoff. Freshman
Ian Whamond made a great run down the left side, beat his defender and then dropped the ball back to Charendoff. He one-timed a right-footed shot just inside the left post from about 10 yards out.
• Gettysburg answered back in the 71
st minute and pushed its lead back to two. Lucas DiGiacomo took a free kick from the left side that senior
James Ford punched away. But Jack Carroll was on the back post and was able to bury the rebound to make it 3-1.
• Carroll pushed the lead to 4-1 in the 86
th minute when he collected a loose ball in the box, dribbled in close and banged one in off the left post.
