How it Happened
Host Susquehanna outscored visiting Johns Hopkins 41-17 in the second and third quarters combined to fuel a 65-41 victory over the Blue Jay women's basketball team in the season opener for both teams Friday evening.
Â
Up 10 at the break, the River Hawks scored the first eight points of the third quarter to push a 34-24 lead to 42-26. An Olivia Brandt three-pointer polished off the eight-pont run that took just over 90 seconds. An
Erin Walsh layup for the Blue Jays with just over seven minutes remaining in the period halted the run and made it 42-28, but Susquehanna never let the Blue Jays get closer than that and pushed the lead over 20 on an Erin McQuillen three pointer with in the final seconds of the third quarter.
Â
Johns Hopkins trimmed the deficit ot 14 at 55-41 with 6:08 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the 'Hawks scored the final 10 points of the game to account for the 65-41 final score.
Â
The Blue Jays had falled behind early in the game as the River Hawks sprinted out to an 8-2 lead in the opening five minutes, but Hopkins responded with a 13-2 run to close the opening period and grab a 15-10 lead at the end of one. A three-pointer from sophomore
Christine Corpuz jump-started the spree for the Blue Jays, who also got triples from freshman
Natalie Mann and senior
Diarra Oden during the run.
Â
Susquehanna quickly turned the five-point deficit at the end of the first quarter into a 10-point lead at half (34-24) as the 'Hawks outscored the Blue Jays 24-9 in the second quarter. SU used a quarter-opening 15-5 run to grab a 30-20 lead with 3:26 on the first-half clock. A Kaitlyn Lynch jumper and three-pointer capped the run to give the 'Hawks the 10-point lead, which they would maintain into the break and steadily build in the second half.
