How it Happened
The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays held York College under 20 points in both halves of Tuesday night's non-conference tilt, defeating the Spartans 42-31.Â
Â
The Blue Jays jumped ahead early, starting the contest on an 11-0 run.
Erin Walsh scored the first points of the contest 53 seconds in. Oden hit a jumper at the 8:22 mark and then knocked down a three with 7:41 to play in the first quarter to give JHU a 7-0 lead.
Greta Miller scored the next four points for Hopkins, extending the lead to 11-0 before York finally got on the board after a 5:34 scoring drought to start the contest. The Hopkins defense forced York to miss its first eight shots of the contest.
Emily Howie hit a three with 3:28 remaining in the first to make it 14-2, but York scored the next four points, holding the Jays scoreless for the final 3:28 to make it a 14-6 game after one.Â
Â
Hopkins extended the lead by three more points before the break, heading into halftime with a 25-14 lead. A
Jadyn Murray layup extended the Jays lead to 10 at 18-8 before
Michaela O'Neil drilled a triple to put Hopkins up 21-8 with just over five to play in the half. Oden extended the lead to 15 with 4:23 remaining in the period after a feed from Howie. Another Oden bucket with 1:52 left in the half made it 25-10 and gave her nine points, but once again, York ended the half with the final four points, making it 25-14 on a Cassidy Arnold layup with 22 seconds remaining.Â
Â
The second half proved to be even more of a defensive struggle as both teams scored 17 points over the final 20 minutes. The teams shot a combined 6-28 in the third period, failing to knock down a triple on 13 attempts. Each team made three shots and earned four points at the charity stripe for the period. Murray scored five points to lead the Blue Jays in the period.Â
Â
The teams shot a combined 5-22 in the final period as they scored seven points a piece and JHU cruised to its first victory of the 2021-22 season. Oden scored five of the team's seven points in the period, finishing with a game-high 14 points on 6-15 shooting.Â
