Blue Jays Dominate Fords - Take Home Fifth Straight Centennial Title

The Basics
• Scores: #1 Johns Hopkins-3, Haverford-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-15)
• Records: JHU (29-0) - Haverford (23-5)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Goldfarb Gymnasium
• The Short Story: The Blue Jays put forth one of their most dominant performances in recent memory, sweeping Haverford to win a fifth straight Centennial Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened

1st Set

• Hopkins wasted zero time asserting themselves in Sunday's championship game, jumping out to a 7-2 lead in set number one. Kills from Lauren Anthony and Sydney Portale along with a duo block from Simone Bliss and Eleni Panagopoulos quickly made it 4-1 in favor of the Jays. Bliss added another kill and an ace as the Jays extended the lead to 7-2.

• Despite two more kills from Portale, Haverford fought back to 9-6 before a 4-0 Johns Hopkins run. Danielle Norman racked up a pair of kills and Bliss added another to extend the Blue Jay lead to 13-6. Haverford took two of the next three, but Hopkins went on another run, this time 6-0, to make it 20-8.

• During the 6-0 run, Bliss racked up three kills, Norman and Panagopoulos had a kill each and Natalie Aston picked up an ace. Haverford was unable to put an end to the run for long as Hopkins finished the set on an 11-2 run. Bliss, Portale and Panagopoulos all had kills in the final stretch for a 25-10 set win.

2nd Set
• After a very competitive start to the set that saw Haverford take a 9-8 lead, the Blue Jays ripped off another 11-2 run to jump ahead 19-11 in the second set before winning it 25-16.

• Hopkins took the first three points of the set with a pair of kills from Bliss and an additional kill from Anthony. Kendall Otridge earned a pair of kills for Haverford and Taylor Jones and Sara Hunsberger added kills as the Fords tied it at 4-4 early on.

• Panagopoulos, Bliss and Portale had kills for the Jays as they jumped ahead 8-5 before Haverford answered with a 4-0 run.

• That's when the next run started for Hopkins as they took the next five points, getting two kills from Norman, one from Panagopoulos and a pair of aces for Sarah Khan. Now leading 13-9, Haverford made it 13-11 with a pair of kills from Dina Kosyagin, but it was another 6-0 run for Hopkins on the backend.

• Norman added two more kills, Portale chipped in with an ace and the Fords had three straight attack errors to put Hopkins on top 19-11. The teams traded points before Bliss and Norman registered back-to-back kills to extend the lead to 22-13.

• Panagopoulos ended the second set with a kill for a 25-16 set win, putting the Fords on ice.

3rd Set
• Johns Hopkins showed early on in the third set what direction the rest of this match was going to go. The Jays jumped out to leads of 9-2 and 17-4 before settling into a 25-15 set victory, sweeping the Fords and hosting the Centennial trophy for the fifth straight time.

• After an outstanding two sets, Bliss got the third set off, but Norman, Portale and Williams made sure that wasn't an issue. The trio combined for nine kills in the set and Anthony added three of her own in the dominant performance.

• Leading 4-2, Hopkins got kills from Norman, Panagopoulos and Portale plus an ace from Norman to take a 9-2 lead. Jones picked up a kill to end the run, but Hopkins scored the next three to force a timeout and take a 12-3 lead.

• By the end of a 15-3 run, Hopkins held a 19-5 lead, proving this one to be all but over. Williams had a pair of kills out of the Haverford timeout, Portale added a kill and an ace and Anthony mixed in a kill as Hopkins led 17-4.

• Two more kills from Anthony had the Blue Jays on top 20-6 before a 5-0 run from the Fords started to make the end result look a bit better. Just into the game moments earlier, Brooklyn Pater earned her first Centennial Tournament kill to put Hopkins on top 22-11.

• Kills from Pamela Chiakpo and Williams made it match point for Hopkins as the lead was 24-12. The Fords took three straight, but a block from Pater ended it and the Jays were champions once again.
