Rutgers Tops Johns Hopkins, 13-10, in Season Opener

The Basics
• Score: Rutgers-13, Johns Hopkins-10
• Records: JHU (0-1, 0-1 B1G) • RU (1-1, 1-1 B1G)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: Visiting Rutgers used a 9-2 run to defeat Johns Hopkins, 13-10, in the Blue Jays' season-opener Sunday at Homewood Field.

How it Happened
• The Scarlet Knights jumped on top of the Blue Jays with a pair of early goals from Cassidy Spilis in a two-minutes pan. Graduate student Lexi Souder answered at the 25:11-mark to spark a five-goal Hopkins run. She took a pass in traffic from senior Keegan Barger, turned and scored on a low bouncer. Senior Shelby Harrison followed with a hard shot off a restart to knot the score at two with 21:24 to play in the half. Less than a minute later, graduate student Maggie Schneidereith took a pass from Harrison and back-handed a shot past Alonna Gliksman to give JHU the lead.
• Sophomore Maeve Barker scored on a one-timer from the left alley at the 18:30-mark and then Harrison converted a free position shot to stake Hopkins to a 5-2 lead. Marin Hartshorn and Spilis answered with two quick scores and the Blue Jays' lead was one with 11:00 to play in the half. Graduate student Mackenzie Heldberg then sandwiched a pair of goals around a second strike from Souder and Hopkins led 8-4.
• Hannah Hollingsworth had the final say for the Scarlet Knights as she scored from the doorstep as the half expired. That goal sparked that game-changing 9-2 run for Rutgers. Coming out of the break, a goal from Ashley Campo and two from Spilis saw the Scarlet Knights tie the game at eight with more than 26 minutes to play.
• Barker scored from in-tight to put the Blue Jays back on top at 24:05, but a Spilis free position goal once again pulled the Knights even. Harrison scored off the dodge with 14:30 to play to put Hopkins on top 10-9, but Rutgers would use a four-goal run to close the game and grab the come-from-behind win.
