Johns Hopkins-Maryland Women's Lacrosse Game Notes

OPENING DRAW
Johns Hopkins returns to Homewood Field to take on ninth-ranked Maryland on Friday afternoon.
• The Blue Jays are coming off a pair of one-goal wins at 24th-ranked Ohio State last weekend. Friday's win over the Buckeyes was the Jays' first of the season and first over a ranked opponent since February 26, 2020 (25th-ranked Georgetown).

LAST TIME OUT
Mackenzie Heldberg and Maggie Schneidereith combined for seven goals to lead Hopkins to a 12-11 win at 24th-ranked Ohio State Friday. Trailing 4-3 with 10:10 to play in the first, Heldberg scored to spark a 6-1 run, that spanned just over 13 minutes, and saw the Blue Jays go up 9-5. The Buckeyes answered with a 6-2 run of their own to knot the score at 11 with 14:37 to play. Schneidereith scored what turned out to be the game-winner at the 13:18-mark and the defense made the 12-11 lead stand.
• After falling behind 6-1 early, Hopkins outscored  Ohio State 9-3 over the final 31 minutes to rally for a 10-9 win on Sunday. The Blue Jays trailed by three with 16:34 to play when Claire Mills scored to ignite a four-goal spurt that gave JHU a 9-8 lead with 3:31 to go. Ohio State answered just 42 seconds later to tie the game, but Shelby Harrison's free position goal with 7.1 ticks on the clock gave Hopkins the win.

I'M HONORED
Freshman Abbey Hurlbrink was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Tuesday after her performance in JHU's two wins at Ohio State.
• Hurlbrink totaled three goals, one ground ball, three caused turnovers and six draws in two wins over the Buckeyes. She scored, picked up a ground ball, controlled three draws and caused three turnovers in the game one win. Her third caused turnover of the game came with eight seconds remaining and helped secure the Blue Jays' 12-11 win. Two days later, she scored a pair of goals and controlled three draws. She was also part of a defense that held the Buckeyes to three second-half goals, including just one in the final 18 1/2 minutes.
• Hurlbrink has scored six goals, on just eight shots on goal, in five games and ranks second on the team with 10 draws. She leads freshmen in the Big Ten in draws and is tied for first in goals.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior Keegan Barger has been selected in a vote by her teammates to serve as the Blue Jays' captain for the 2021 season. In addition, a member of each class was selected to serve in a "captain's cohort" to assist Barger this season.
• This marks just the fourth time in the 46-year history of the program, and the first time since 1996, that the Blue Jays will have a lone captain. Barger, who has started every game of her career, was one of three Blue Jays named to the Big Ten's Preseason Players to Watch list.
• Graduate student Lexi Souder, senior Jeanne Kachris, junior Annika Meyer, sophomore Bailey Cheetham and freshman Abbey Hurlbrink were selected for the captain's cohort.
