Blue Jays Swept In Season-Opening Doubleheader With Diplomats

GAME ONE
• Score: JHU - 1, Franklin & Marshall - 2
• Records: JHU (0-1) • F&M (1-0)
• Pitching Decision: W – Matt Devlin (1-0),  • L – Jonah Offman (0-1)
• The Short Story: Despite holding a 1-0 lead into the eighth inning, the Blue Jays dropped their season opener to Franklin & Marshall, 2-1.

How it Happened
• JHU started the scoring in the top of the first inning, as leadoff man Dai Dai Otaka drew a leadoff walk before coming around to score the first run of the season. Matthew Ritchie singled to move Otaka into scoring position. James Ingram picked up a base knock, moving the runners over before being thrown out on the bases. Barrett Smith grounded out to short, but Otaka came in to score to give the Jays a 1-0 lead.
• Blue Jay starting pitcher Jack McRae cruised through three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out a pair. The Diplomats moved just one runner into scoring position during McRae's three innings on the bump.
• Sophomore Kieren Collins took over on the mound in the fourth, allowing a leadoff single to Dan Baroff. Collins retired the next three batters, including a strikeout of Don DiLoreto to keep it a 1-0 game after four innings.
• JHU threatened again in the fifth, but ultimately came up empty. Dillon Bowman drew a one-out walk, moving over to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Devlin, who was outstanding for the Diplomats, struck out A.J. King and got Mark Lopez to fly out to center, keeping the deficit at 1-0.
• The Blue Jays picked up a pair of singles from Smith and Jared deFaria in the top of the seventh inning, but a double play wiped Smith off the bases and the inning ended with a fielder's choice off the bat of Bowman.
• After a scoreless seventh inning, the Diplomats got to reliever Jonah Offman in the bottom of the eighth. J.J. Freeman led off with a single, advancing to second on a one-out walk drawn by Baroff. With two on and one away, DiLoreto singled, bringing Freeman home to tie the contest at 1-1. Brian Linton replaced Offman and gave up an RBI single to Will Samuel, putting the Diplomats ahead, 2-1.
• After eight one-run innings and nine strikeouts, Devlin handed the ball over to Stephen Turzai to close things out. Ritchie drew a leadoff walk for JHU, but Turzai responded by retiring the next two batters. Isaiah Winikur extended the game with his first knock as a Blue Jay, but Turzai got deFaria to bounce into a fielder's choice to give F&M a 2-1 victory.

 Inside the Box Score
• All three of the transfers in the starting lineup, Otaka, Winikur and Smith reached base in their first game with the Blue Jays.
• Ritchie was the lone Blue Jay to reach base twice, picking up a hit in the first inning and drawing a walk in the ninth.
• The sophomore duo of McRae and Collins combined to throw six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out three.
• Matt Devlin is the first pitcher to strike out nine Blue Jays since Robert Klinchock in JHU's 6-3 victory over Shenandoah in the 2019 Super Regionals.

GAME TWO
• Score: JHU - 0, Franklin & Marshall - 7
• Records: JHU (0-2) • F&M (2-0)
• Pitching Decision: W – Kyle Roche (1-0) • L – Peter Schaefer  (0-1)
• The Short Story: Leading 2-0 in the fifth, the Diplomats piled on four more en route to a 7-0 victory and a doubleheader sweep of the Blue Jays.

How it Happened
• Franklin & Marshall starter, Kyle Roche, threw six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and matching Devlin's nine strikeouts, while keeping the Blue Jays off-balance all day. Roche didn't issue any walks, but did hit four Blue Jay batters.
• It looked like Johns Hopkins might start the scoring in the first inning once again. Matthew Ritchie ripped a double into left, putting a runner in scoring position with just one away. However, Roche induced a pair of ground balls from Austin Sacks and Jared deFaria, stranding Ritchie.
• F&M was able to get on the board in the bottom of the second, as Don DiLoreto roped a leadoff double into left center. Will Samuel drew a free pass and Tommy Denlinger singled to load up the bases. Schaefer struck out the next two batters, but Matt Gluck poked one into left and the Diplomats took a 2-0 lead.
• Isaiah Winikur singled to right center with one out in the fourth and then swiped second base to give the Jays a runner in scoring position with just one out. Hopkins couldn't capitalize as Roche struck out Tripp Myers and Sam Frank to avoid any further trouble.
• With Carson McKoon on the mound in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Diplomats were able to add to their lead. After striking out the first two batters, the grad transfer ran into trouble, allowing a two-out single to Dan Baroff before issuing a walk to Steven Rizzo. With two on and two out, Samuel singled to right center, bringing home Baroff. Denlinger singled, scoring Rizzo, and the lead had grown to 4-0. Ben Keever replaced McKoon, allowing a walk to Butera and a two-run single to Michael Cole before finally getting out of the inning with a 6-0 deficit.
• Hopkins got a pair of pinch-hit singles from Mike Ainsworth and David Harding in the top of the seventh, but Dai Dai Otaka flied out with runners on first and third to end the inning.
• Butera hit a solo shot to right center in the bottom of the seventh, putting the finishing touches on a 7-0 victory in game two of the doubleheader.

 Inside the Box Score
• Ritchie reached base twice, giving him two hits and two walks for the day, including the lone extra-base hit for JHU.
• Freshman James Stevens and grad transfer David Harding both picked up their first hits as Blue Jays.
• Winikur and Myers both picked up a stolen base each in the contest.
• Blue Jay pitchers combined to strike out 11 batters in game two of the doubleheader, led by five from Schaefer in 3.1 innings.
