The Short Story:Â The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team's 11 seniors and graduate students combined for 11 goals and 11 assists as the Blue Jays beat 23
rd-ranked Rutgers, 17-10, on Senior Day at Homewood Field.
Â
How it Happened
• Rutgers led early after Ashley Campo and Hannah Hollingsworth sandwiched a pair of goals around an
Abbey Hurlbrink free position goal. Graduate student
Mackenzie Heldberg and senior
Shelby Harrison answered with back-to-back goals just 83 seconds apart to stake Hopkins to a 3-2 lead.
• Ashley Moynahan scored on from a tough angle off the dodge to tie the game with 19:20 to play in the half. The Blue Jays responded with four goals in just six minutes to push out to a 7-3 lead. Senior
Aurora Cordingley sparked the run when she took a pass from Heldberg, hitched twice and then beat Sophia Caradello to the left post. Harrison converted a free position shot and sophomore
Maeve Barker scored consecutive goals, including one in transition after a takeaway by senior
Jeanne Kachris.
• Taralyn Naslonski ended the Blue Jays' run when she curled from behind the cage and scored on a sidearm shot at 6:22. Hopkins answered with five straight goals in a run that bridged halftime and gave the home team a 12-4 lead.
• Senior
Keegan Barger kick-started the run on a one-timer from Heldberg and just 60 seconds later, Cordingley scored off a nifty feed from graduate student
Maggie Schneidereith. Barker closed out the first-half scoring when she scored from in-tight with 2:12 to play in the half.
• Hopkins picked up where it left off in the second. A takeaway by senior
Trinity McPherson and some tic-tac-toe passing led to a transition goal by Cordingley at the 26:45-mark. Exactly one minute later, Barker scored on the doorstep after Heldberg intercepted a Rutgers' clearing pass and JHU led 12-4.
• The Scarlet Knights ended the run with back-to-back goals by Naslonski and Spilis to pull within six with 23:54 to go. Schneidereith and freshman
Eliza Bowman answered with two for the Blue Jays and just like that the led was back to eight. Rutgers wasn't going away however as the visitors used a 4-1 run to trim the deficit to five with 8:42 on the clock.
• The Blue Jays took over from there. The defense held the Knights to five shots, no goals and forced a pair of turnovers in the final eight minutes. On the other end of the field, Cordingley scored twice to push their lead to seven.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 6-1 all-time against Rutgers and splits the season series with the Scarlet Knights.
• The win is the 299
th for head coach
Janine Tucker, who needs just one win to become just the ninth coach in NCAA Division I history to win 300 games.
• Cordingley's fifth goal of the game was the 100
th of her career. She is the 14
th player in school Division I history, and 28
th all-time to reach the milestone.
