Johns Hopkins Drops Heartbreaker at 11th-ranked Maryland, 9-8

The Basics
• Score: #11 Maryland-9, #20 Johns Hopkins-8
• Records: JHU (4-5, 4-5 B1G) • UM (7-4, 7-4 B1G)
• Location: College Park, MD • Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex
• The Short Story:  Grace Griffin scored with 39.3 seconds remaining in a rain-soaked affair to lift host and 11th-ranked Maryland to a 9-8 win over 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins Wednesday afternoon.

 How it Happened
• Brindi Griffin halted a four-goal Hopkins' run when she scored on a low-to-low shot from six yards out. That tied the game at eight with 2:48 to play. After trading empty possessions, Griffin dodged from the sideline off a restart and scored on a left-handed sidearm shot from the top of the fan to give the Terps their first lead since the 14:29-mark.
• Hopkins opened the scoring at 21:44 when Shelby Harrison found a cutting Lexi Souder, who dropped her stick and beat Emily Sterling from the doorstep. Just over four minutes later, Maggie Schneidereith slipped a pass to Aurora Cordingley cutting through the middle and she hitched once then scored.
• Maryland answered with three straight goals over a 12 minute span and took a 3-2 lead on Brindi Griffin's first goal of the game. Schneidereith answered for the Blue Jays with a high-to-low shot from the right alley to knot the score at three with 3:07 to play in the half.
• Brindi Griffin put the Terps back on top at the break when she scored on a low shot off the dodge. Hannah Leubecker then opened the second-half scoring with a shot from in-tight to put Maryland up 5-3 just 24 seconds in.
• Heldberg cut the deficit in half when she dodged to the cage and slipped a shot over the top of Sterling. Catie May and Brindi Griffin answered however with a pair of goals just 75 seconds apart to stake Maryland to a 7-4 lead with 26:04 to play.
• Cordingley converted a free position goal at 24:36 to spark that four-goal run that spanned more than 17 minutes as the Blue Jays retook the lead. Harrison followed with a one-timer off the Heldberg feed and the deficit was one. Cordingley then scored back-to-back goals to put Hopkins on top 8-7 with 7:27 to go. Her third goal of the afternoon came after taking charge on the Terps' clear and then scoring on the ensuing free position shot. She then scored on the back-door cut with just one second remaining on the shot clock. Brindi Griffin would then spark the come-back for Maryland with her goal at 2:48. It was the Terps' first goal in more than 23 minutes.
