Schaefer's Dominance & deFaria's Bat Lead Hopkins To DH Sweep Of Ursinus On Senior Day

GAME ONE
• Score: Johns Hopkins - 11, Ursinus College - 2
• Records: JHU (8-3) • GC (4-6, 4-5)
• Pitching Decision: W: Peter Schaefer (3-2) • L – Nick DeFeo (1-4)
• The Short Story: After trailing 2-0 in the fourth, Johns Hopkins scored 11 unanswered to defeat Ursinus 11-2 and win their seventh straight contest.

How it Happened
• After stranding a runner on third in the first inning, Ursinus finally got to Peter Schaefer in the top of the third. Tom Jacobs led off with a double to right center on a 2-2 count. Looking to advance the runner with a sacrifice, Dan Icaza beat out a bunt single, putting runners on the corners. Icaza stole second and advanced to third while Jacobs scored on a wild pitch. Will Peiffer hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Icaza to give Ursinus a 2-0 lead.
• The Blue Jays cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting an RBI single from Mark Lopez, one of 17 seniors honored prior to the contest. With one out, James Ingram led off with an infield single to short. Ingram advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single to left off the bat of Lopez.
• A couple of key miscues on the defensive side for the Bears sparked a five-run inning for Hopkins. Matthew Ritchie led off with a pop-up to third base, but Jared Minnichbach couldn't make the play. AJ King and Jared deFaria hit back-to-back singles with Ritchie scoring on deFaria's. The runners advanced on a passed ball, allowing Austin Sacks to bring home two runs with an RBI double down the RF line. After a pitching change, Ingram drew a walk, advancing on a sacrifice from Mike Ainsworth. David Harding brought home Sacks with a pinch-hit RBI groundout and Lopez tacked on another with an RBI single, pushing the Hopkins lead to 5-2.
• In the sixth, Jared deFaria caught a 2-2 pitch in the middle of the zone and launched it over the left-field wall for his first homer of the season.
• Hopkins made it four straight innings with a run scored, adding another to make it 8-2 after seven. Getting a pinch-hit opportunity, Isaiah Winikur doubled into the gap in right-center. Lopez got ahold of another one, this time lacing a double to left to score Winikur.
• Johns Hopkins finished the job with three more runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Nick Li picked up an RBI single before Jack Walters and Ainsworth both picked up RBI's after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Inside the Box Score
• After earning the Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Week honor, Schaefer went out and did it again. The sophomore pitched eight innings, allowed just four hits and two runs while striking out a career-high 12. Schaefer is the first Blue Jay with 12 K's since Alex Ross in 2018.
• Lopez picked up three hits and three RBI on the day, his third game this season with at least three RBI.
• deFaria continued a hot run at the plate, going 3-4 with his first home run of the season and two RBI. deFaria has reached base in seven straight contests and has driven in a run in six of 11 contests.
• This is the third straight game with at least 11 runs for Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays scored 11 or more just twice in 2020's 12-game season.
• Ritchie has reached base in 13 straight games and 24 of 25 contests dating back to the 2019 College World Series.

GAME TWO
• Score: Johns Hopkins - 5, Ursinus - 2
• Records: JHU (9-3) • UC (4-7, 4-6)
• Pitching Decision: W: Kieren Collins (3-0) • L: Nolan Graber (3-2) • Save: McRae (1)
• The Short Story: Hopkins jumped on Ursinus starter Nolan Graber early, taking a 5-0 lead before hanging on for a 5-2 victory.

How it Happened
• The Blue Jays wasted no time getting on the board against Ursinus starter Nolan Graber. Dai Dai Otaka led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle. Matt Ritchie found a soft spot in the shift, beating out an infield single to put two men on. With one out and two runners in scoring position, deFaria continued his hot streak, ripping a double into right-center, scoring a pair. Austin Sacks knifed one into shallow center, allowing deFaria to score to take a quick 3-0 lead.
• Defense hurt the Bears again in the bottom of the second. With two outs and Mark Lopez on second, Ritchie hit a ball hard into left-center. Dan Icaza dropped the ball tracking back near the fence, allowing Lopez to score and give JHU a 4-0 lead.
• The Blue Jays got just one more run on a solo shot off the bat of Jared deFaria in the third inning, his second homer of the day. Afterwards, Graber settled in, completing all eight innings in the losing effort.
• In the top of the fifth, Kieren Collins handed out a leadoff walk to Jerry Scavone. With two outs, Scavone stole second and came home to score on an RBI single from Colby Chan.
• After working out of trouble with minimal damage in the fifth, Ursinus came right back at Collins in the sixth. Tom Snipes ripped a solo shot to left-center with one away, cutting the Hopkins deficit to three. Collins allowed a pair of two-out singles, sending Bob Babb to the bullpen for Jack McRae. McRae got the batter to foul out to left, keeping the lead intact.
• McRae allowed a pair of two-out baserunners in the eighth, but retired Jared Minnichbach to end the inning. The sophomore went 1-2-3 in the ninth to earn the save.
