Johns Hopkins-Penn State Women's Lacrosse Game Notes

OPENING DRAW
Johns Hopkins is the number three seed in the 2021 Big Ten Tournament and will take on host and sixth-seeded Penn State in the quarterfinals.
• Hopkins is coming off a sweep of 23rd-ranked Michigan to wrap up the regular season as the Blue Jays finished in a tie for second in the Big Ten.

AFTER THE BREAK
• The Blue Jays wrapped up a stretch of six games in 17 days on Saturday as they raced to the end of the regular season after a 26-day layoff.
• That 26-day layoff seems to be just what the doctor ordered. In the six games since, JHU has scored 84 goals (14.00/game), with 40 assists, and is connecting on 70.2 percent of its shots on goal. In addition, Hopkins is 16-of-35 (.457) on free position shots and is 82-of-160 at the draw (.513). In the cage, Hopkins has posted a .454 save percentage and a 10.69 goals against average.

LAST TIME OUT
• Hopkins swept host and 23rd-ranked Michigan last weekend in both teams' regular season finales. Thursday's win gave the Blue Jays six league wins on the season and secured the number three seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
• Trailing by four with 17:05 to play, Hopkins scored four goals in less than nine minutes to tie the game at 11. Michigan retook the lead with 6:53 to play, but a Mackenzie Heldberg goal with just 21 ticks on the clock tied the game and forced overtime. Freshman Abbey Hurlbrink then gave the Blue Jays the win with her second free position goal of the game with 52 seconds to play in overtime. Heldberg (5g) and senior Aurora Cordingley (2g, 3a) led Hopkins with five points apiece. Sophomore Madison McPherson had a career-best seven draws and picked up four ground balls while senior Kathleen Garvey made nine saves, including six in the second half.
• Michigan jumped out to a 5-2 lead with 18:17 to go in the first half before a Shelby Harrison goal sparked a 6-1 run that put Hopkins on top 8-6. The Wolverines answered with a three-goal spurt to retake the lead. The Blue Jays responded with 12 of the next 14 goals to take a 20-11 lead with 6:49 remaining before a pair of late Wolverine goals. Maggie Schneidereith led Hopkins with a career-best seven goals and nine points while Heldberg and Maeve Barker added five points (3g, 2a) each.

I'M HONORED
• Hopkins swept the Big Ten Player of the Week awards  and garnered the IWLCA National Player of the Week.
• Graduate student Maggie Schneidereith was named the B1G Offensive and IWCLA National Player of the Week after totaling nine goals and three assists and two ground balls. She scored twice and assisted on a third in Thursday's overtime win and followed that with a seven-goal, two-assist performance on Saturday. Schneidereith's seven goals and nine points are both career highs and her seven goals are one shy of the school record.
• Senior Trinity McPherson was named the B1G Defensive Player of the Week after tallying three caused turnovers and three ground balls in the sweep of the Wolverines.
• Sophomore Madison McPherson earned B1G Midfielder of the Week with 14 draws, six ground balls and one caused turnover versus Michigan. On Thursday, she had a career-high seven draws, picked up four ground balls and caused a turnover that led to the game-winning goal. She followed that with seven draws and two ground balls in Saturday's win.
• Freshman Abbey Hurlbrink was named the B1G Freshman of the Week with three goals, four caused turnovers and six draws. She scored two goals, including the overtime winner, in Thursday's win. She also caused three turnovers, picked up a ground ball and controlled a draw. On Saturday, Hurlbrink scored a goal, caused a turnover and had five draws. This was Hurlbrink's second B1G Freshman of the Week honor (March 9). She has scored 12 goals, on 19 shots on goal, in 2 games and ranks third on the team with 26 draws. She ranks second among freshmen in the Big Ten in draws and third in goals.
Seniors Aurora Cordingley, Shelby Harrison and Kathleen Garvey were honored by the Big Ten on April 13 for their performances in Hopkins' wins over Penn State and Rutgers.
• Cordingley was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week as well as the US Lacrosse Player of the Week after totaling 12 goals, one assist, 11 draw controls and five caused turnovers in the two wins.
•  Harrison was named the Midfielder of the Week with three goals, one assist, one ground ball and 14 draw controls.
• Garvey earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after totaling 22 saves, six ground balls and a caused turnover for the week.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior Keegan Barger has been selected in a vote by her teammates to serve as the Blue Jays' captain for the 2021 season. In addition, a member of each class was selected to serve in a "captain's cohort" to assist Barger this season.
• This marks just the fourth time in the 46-year history of the program, and the first time since 1996, that the Blue Jays will have a lone captain. Barger, who has started every game of her career, was one of three Blue Jays named to the Big Ten's Preseason Players to Watch list.
