Johns Hopkins Tops #20 Penn State in Big Ten Quarterfinals

The Basics
• Score: #13 Johns Hopkins-11, #20 Penn State-9
• Records: JHU (8-5) • PSU (4-9)
• Location: State College, PA • Panzer Stadium
• The Short Story: Maggie Schneidereith and Mackenzie Heldberg combined for 10 points to lead the third-seeded Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team to an 11-9 win over host and sixth-seeded Penn State in the Big Ten Quarterfinals Thursday night.

 How it Happened
• Hopkins raced out to a 10-2 lead just 39 seconds into the second half but a Maria Auth goal sparked a five-goal run by Penn State that pulled the Nittany Lions within three with 12:30 to play in the game. Olivia Dirks followed Auth's goal with a free position strike and then Quinn Nicolai scored three in a row, in a span of five minutes to make it a 10-7 game.
• Sophomore Maeve Barker scored off the dodge to end a 17-minute scoreless drought for the Blue Jays and put them on top 11-7 at the 12:02 mark. Penn State wasn't going away however as Nicolai answered with two more goals to cut Hopkins' lead to two with 8:46 to go. As it turned out, that was the final goal of the game as the Blue Jays did not allow the Nittany Lions any closer.
• Schneidereith opened the scoring at 26:46 when she blew home a shot from eight yards out. Dirks answered for Penn State just 76 seconds later, scoring on a free position shot to tie the game. Schneidereith was on the receiving end of some crisp tic-tac-toe passing after a Shelby Harrison draw control win and the Blue Jays were back on top. That goal ignited a 7-0 run that saw Hopkins push out to an 8-1 lead.
• Heldberg took a skip pass from Aurora Cordingley and scored from the doorstep to make it a 3-1 game. Abbey Hurlbrink followed with a high-to-low shot to the bottom left corner off a feed from Schneidereith at the 18:00-mark. Heldberg got her second of the night just three minutes later, scoring on a one-timer off the Schneidereith assist.
• Keegan Barger converted a free position shot, followed by a quick-stick goal from Barker. Just 67 seconds later, Heldberg capped the run, and her first-half hat trick, when Cordingley found her open on the back-door cut and just like that Hopkins led 8-1.
• Dirks cut in the Blue Jays' lead when she scored off the left alley dodge with 6:13 to play. That ended a scoreless drought of more than 19 minutes for the Nittany Lions. Heldberg answered right back for Hopkins, spinning on her defender and beating Lucy Lowe on a tough-angled shot.
• Hurlbrink opened the second-half scoring and pushed the Blue Jays lead to 10-2 just 39 seconds in when she beat Taylor Suplee on a high-to-low shot from the right alley. The Penn State offense would get hot after that, taking this one down to the wire.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 8-16 all-time against Penn State and won all three meetings with the Nittany Lions this season.
• JHU wins its first-ever Big Ten Tournament game since joining the league in 2017. Hopkins will now face second-seeded Maryland, which beat Michigan 16-13, in the semifinals.
• Heldberg became the 15th player in school Division I history to score 100 goals with her second of the night. In addition, Schneidereith scored her 150th career goal.
