Maryland Slips Past Johns Hopkins in Big Ten Semifinals

The Basics
• Score: #13 Maryland-8, #13 Johns Hopkins-7
• Records: JHU (8-6) • UM (9-5)
• Location: State College, PA • Panzer Stadium
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team outscored Maryland, 7-4, in the second half but fell just short in an 8-7 loss to the second-seeded Terps in the Big Ten Semifinals Friday night at Penn State.

 How it Happened
• Brindi Griffin put the Terps on top early when she scored on a low-to-low shot with just one second left on the shot clock. That kick-started a four-goal run in a 14-minute span and Maryland would take a 4-0 lead into the half. Hannah Warther and Grace Griffin followed with unassisted tallies just two minutes apart and the lead was three. Griffin book-ended the run when she scored on a low shot on the doorstep in transition.
•  Hopkins came out firing to start the second half and scored three goals in a minute and 43 seconds to pull back within one. Freshman Abbey Hurlbrink put the Blue Jays on the board when she picked the far post on a high-to-low shot from the right alley at 25:56. Graduate student Mackenzie Heldberg dodged from behind, ducked inside her defender and scored from in-tight to make it a two-goal game. Just 24 seconds later, she came around the right side, turned and beat Emily Sterling to the far post to pull the Blue Jays within one.
• Maryland answered with three straight over 10 minutes to push out to a 7-3 lead with 13:17 to play. Grace Griffin sandwiched a pair around a strike from Hannah Leubecker and just like that the lead was back to four.
• Senior Aurora Cordingley ended the run when she beat Sterling on a bouncer to the left post with 11:31 on the clock. Just 87 seconds later, freshman Eliza Bowman scored on a bounce-shot off the eight-meter and it was a 7-5 game. Hurlbrink then scored on a high-to-low shot off the right-alley dodge and the Blue Jays were back within one with 7:46 to play.
• Libby May pushed the Terps' lead back to two when she took a pass from Grace Griffin and scored on a one-timer in the slot. Cordingley answered again for the Blue Jays and rewarded her defense after a stop on the other end. She took a pass from senior Trinity McPherson at the restraining line, split a trio of Maryland defenders and beat Sterling over the top at the 4:04-mark. That turned out to be the final goal of the game as both defenses came up with takeaways in the final three minutes.
