OPENING DRAW
• Johns Hopkins finally returns to the field to host 14th-ranked Penn State at Homewood Field.
• JHU last played on March 12, a tough 9-8 overtime loss to ninth-ranked Maryland. Following a bye-week, the Blue Jays saw their two-game series at Michigan postponed twice leading to a 26-day layoff for the Blue Jays.
• It will be a mad dash to the end of the regular season for Hopkins as it is scheduled to play six games in 17 days - with the final four games on the road.
LAST TIME OUT
• Hopkins dropped a heartbreaker in overtime to ninth-ranked Maryland at Homewood Field in its last outing. Hannah Leubecker scored with 3:08 to play in overtime to give the Terps a 9-8 win.
• Hopkins took an early 2-1 lead, but Maryland answered with three straight to go up 4-2. The Blue Jays answered with three of their own to take a 5-4 lead into the half. The Terps came out firing in the second with three unanswered to go up 7-5. The teams then traded goals and Maryland led 8-6 with 10:57 to play.
•
Shelby Harrison and
Aurora Cordingley scored back-to-back goals less than three minutes apart to tie the game at the 6:09-mark. Both defenses got stops over the final six minutes and for the first time in 20 meetings, Hopkins and Maryland would need overtime to decide a winner.
•
Mackenzie Heldberg led the Blue Jays with a game-high five points (2g, 3a) while
Maggie Schneidereith and Cordingley had three points (2g, 1a) each.
Kathleen Garvey finished with 12 saves for her third double-digit save performance of the season.
ONE LOVE
• On Wednesday, Hopkins and Penn State will be playing in support of the One Love Foundation.
• The One Love Foundation was founded in honor of
Yeardley Love, a University of Virginia women's lacrosse player who tragically lost her life in 2010 at the hands of her ex-boyfriend.
• One Love's mission is to educate young people about healthy and unhealthy relationships, empowering them to identify and avoid abuse and learn how to love better. Young women in Yeardley's age group are at three times greater risk for relationship violence and abuse than any other demographic.
I'M HONORED
• Freshman
Abbey Hurlbrink was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on March 9 after her performance in JHU's two wins at Ohio State.
• Hurlbrink totaled three goals, one ground ball, three caused turnovers and six draws in two wins over the Buckeyes. She scored, picked up a ground ball, controlled three draws and caused three turnovers in the game one win. Her third caused turnover of the game came with eight seconds remaining and helped secure the Blue Jays' 12-11 win. Two days later, she scored a pair of goals and controlled three draws. She was also part of a defense that held the Buckeyes to three second-half goals, including just one in the final 18 1/2 minutes.
• Hurlbrink has scored seven goals, on just nine shots on goal, in six games and ranks second on the team with 13 draws. She ranks third among freshmen in the Big Ten in draws and goals.
