The Short Story:Â Senior
Aurora Cordingley poured in a career-high six goals to lead the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team to a 13-10 win over 14
th-ranked Penn State in Big Ten action at Homewood Field.
Â
How it Happened
• It was back-and-forth early as Olivia Dirks and Gretchen Gilmore sandwiched goals around a Cordingley strike and Penn State led 2-1 at the 25:10-mark. Graduate student
Maggie Schneidereith converted a free position goal, followed by a low sidearm shot by Cordingley to put Hopkins on top 3-2 with 18:03 to play in the half.
• Quinn Nicolai answered with a free position goal three minutes later and the score was knotted at three. Sophomore
Maeve Barker scored on a jump shot off a feed from Schneidereith to give the lead back to the Blue Jays, but again the Nittany Lions answered with a Kristin O'Neill high-to-low goal and it was 4-4 with 6:49 on the clock.
• Senior
Shelby Harrison scored on a free position shot less than a minute later to spark a five-goal Blue Jay run that bridged halftime and saw JHU go up 9-4. Schneidereith followed with a left-handed rocket from eight yards out. Cordingley completed her first-half hat trick, capitalizing off a
Trinity McPherson takeaway, by tip-toeing the crease and beating Taylor Suplee from in-tight.
• Cordingley picked up right where she left off with back-to-back free position goals to cap the five-goal rally and stake Hopkins to a 9-4 lead with 25:23 left. The teams then traded goals over an 11-minute span and the Blue Jays led 11-7 at the 10:29-mark.
• Freshman
Abbey Hurlbrink pushed the lead back to five when she scored off the run from the right alley at 9:30. Just 63 seconds later, graduate student
Mackenzie Heldberg dodged from behind the cage, spun on her defender and beat Suplee over the top to put JHU up 13-7.
• Maria Auth would pull the Nittany Lions back within three scoring three straight goals in a span of just three minutes and 27 seconds. But that's as close as Penn State could get as Hopkins closed out the win.
Â
