Johns Hopkins-Rutgers Women's Lacrosse Game Notes

OPENING DRAW
Johns Hopkins is back at Homewood Field to wrap up its 2021 home schedule with a rematch with 23rd-ranked Rutgers.
• The Blue Jays returned from a 26-day layoff with a 13-10 win over the 14th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions on Wednesday afternoon. The snapped a five-game losing streak to Penn State and was JHU's first home win in the series since April 27, 2007.
• It will be a mad dash to the end of the regular season for Hopkins as it is scheduled to play six games in 17 days - with the final four games on the road.

LAST TIME OUT
Aurora Cordingley poured in a career-high six goals to fuel Hopkins' 13-10 win over Penn State.
• With the game tied at four and six minutes to play in the half, Shelby Harrison scored to spark a five-goal Blue Jay run that bridged halftime. Penn State ended the run and a nearly 15-minute scoring drought  with a Sophia Triandafils goal with 22:01 left. The teams traded goals over an 11 minute span and Hopkins led 11-7.
• Back-to-back goals from Abbey Hurlbrink and Mackenzie Heldberg pushed the Blue Jays' lead to six with 8:27 to go. Penn State would pull within three by the 2:19-mark, but could get no closer.
Maggie Schneidereith (2g, 1a) and Harrison (1g, 1a) were the only other multi-point scorers for the Blue Jays. Harrison also had a game and season-high eight draw controls.
Annika Meyer led the defense with a career-high five caused turnovers while Trinity McPherson matched her career-high with four takeaways. Kathleen Garvey finished with 10 saves and three ground balls for her fourth double-digit save performance of the season.

ONE LOVE
Hopkins and Penn State played in support of the One Love Foundation on Wednesday afternoon.
• The One Love Foundation was founded in honor of Yeardley Love, a University of Virginia women's lacrosse player who tragically lost her life in 2010 at the hands of her ex-boyfriend.
• One Love's mission is to educate young people about healthy and unhealthy relationships, empowering them to identify and avoid abuse and learn how to love better. Young women in Yeardley's age group are at three times greater risk for relationship violence and abuse than any other demographic.

I'M HONORED
Freshman Abbey Hurlbrink was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on March 9 after her performance in JHU's two wins at Ohio State.
• Hurlbrink totaled three goals, one ground ball, three caused turnovers and six draws in two wins over the Buckeyes. She scored, picked up a ground ball, controlled three draws and caused three turnovers in the game one win. Her third caused turnover of the game came with eight seconds remaining and helped secure the Blue Jays' 12-11 win. Two days later, she scored a pair of goals and controlled three draws. She was also part of a defense that held the Buckeyes to three second-half goals, including just one in the final 18 1/2 minutes.
• Hurlbrink has scored eight goals, on just 10 shots on goal, in seven games and ranks second on the team with 16 draws. She ranks third among freshmen in the Big Ten in draws and goals.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior Keegan Barger has been selected in a vote by her teammates to serve as the Blue Jays' captain for the 2021 season. In addition, a member of each class was selected to serve in a "captain's cohort" to assist Barger this season.
• This marks just the fourth time in the 46-year history of the program, and the first time since 1996, that the Blue Jays will have a lone captain. Barger, who has started every game of her career, was one of three Blue Jays named to the Big Ten's Preseason Players to Watch list.
• Graduate student Lexi Souder, senior Jeanne Kachris, junior Annika Meyer, sophomore Bailey Cheetham and freshman Abbey Hurlbrink were selected for the captain's cohort.
