Jays Roll Over Tigers In Top-Five Matchup

The Basics
• Score: #1 Johns Hopkins-3 • Colorado College-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19)
• Records: #1 Johns Hopkins (9-0) • Colorado College (11-1)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Goldfarb Gymnasium
• The Short Story: Top-ranked JHU handled Colorado College in a top-five clash inside Goldfarb Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened

SET ONE
• Colorado College recorded the first point of the contest on a kill from Georgia Mullins. The Blue Jays proceeded to rip off six of the next seven points to jump out to a 6-2 lead. Eleni Panagopoulos & Simone Bliss picked up a pair of kills each during the run.
• The Tigers answered with a run of their own, getting contributions from all over as a Meghan Hohman kill cut the deficit to 10-9.
• Bliss picked up back-to-back kills, extending the Blue Jay lead to three, but a series of Blue Jay attacking errors helped the Tigers take a 15-13 lead over the top-ranked Jays.
• With the Jays trailing 19-16 and Evelyn Batista serving, the Jays changed the dynamic of the set with a five-point run. Lauren Anthony, Bliss & Natalie Aston all added kills during the run.
• Tied 21-21, Hopkins took the final four points, getting an Aston kill, an Anthony ace and a pair of attacking errors to take the first set, 25-21.

SET TWO
• After a quick 3-2 Tiger lead, Hopkins scored five in a row for a 7-3 lead. Panagopoulos picked up a pair of kills during the run while the Jays also got offensive contributions from Elayna Williams and Sydney Portale.
• Leading 10-8, Bliss went back-to-back, followed by a Colorado College attacking error to extend the Hop lead to 13-8.
• Hopkins handled the rest of set two with relative ease, scoring six-of-seven at one point to take a 22-13 lead. Portale chipped in three kills during the run with a kill each coming from Bliss and Williams.
• Anthony slammed down the final point of the set to put JHU up 2-0 with a 25-17 set victory.

SET THREE
• Hoping to make this more than a three-set match, the Tigers battled early in the set, getting kills from four different players as the set started 6-6.
• A Roxy Karrer service error tied things at 7-7 before a Skya Favor kill put Colorado College on top 9-8. Aston and Isabella Vasquez traded kills before Bliss picked up a kill to tie it at 10. The Jays scored three straight to take a 13-10 lead and never trailed again in the set.
• Unable to put the Tigers to bed just yet, kills from Isabell Lipacis and Mullins tied the set at 16-16 and 17-17 respectively. However, the Tigers could do no more than tie.
• After another Vasquez kill tied things at 18, JHU won the next five points to put things away. Panagopoulos registered a pair of kills and Anthony picked up an ace to make it 23-18. Aston added one final kill before setting Portale for the match clincher.

What it Means
• The Blue Jays improved to 9-0 on the year and extended their overall winning streak to 44 dating back to the start of the 2019 season.
• The 44-match winning streak is the fourth-longest winning streak in Division III history. Juniata won 43 straight in 1996.
• After failing to reach 10 kills for the first time in 14 matches on Wednesday night, Bliss has responded with matches of 20 kills and 14 kills, potentially opening up a new streak for the graduate.

Inside the Box Score
• Panagopoulos played her biggest offensive role of the 2021 season, finishing second on the team with a season-high 11 kills. The senior middle was ruthlessly efficient, picking up 11 kills on just 15 swings, hitting .733 for the match. The senior added three block assists in the match as well.
• Aston matched Friday night's total with 39 assists, this time doing it in just three sets. The senior added six kills, six digs and three blocks. Sarah Khan led the match with 14 digs.
• Mullins and Vasquez did much of the offensive heavy lifting for the Tigers. The pair combined for 22 of the team's 38 kills for the match. Vasquez picked up 12 on a .214 hitting percentage while Mullins hit .391 with 10 kills.
• JHU hit .339 for the match, raising its season percentage to .255. It was the fifth match this season where JHU hit better than .300.
