The Short Story: The top-ranked Johns Hopkins volleyball team ran its season-opening winning streak to 10 and its overall winning streak to 45 with a sweep of host Swarthmore Saturday afternoon in Tarble Pavilion.
How it Happened
SET ONE
• The Garnet built early leads of 4-1 and 8-4 with the last two of those early points coming off the serve of Trisha Razdan; three attack errors and a ball-handling error by the Blue Jays accounted for four of the first eight points for Swarthmore.
• A Razdan service error helped jump-start a 4-0 run for Johns Hopkins that was highlighted by a
Lauren Anthony kill off an assist from
Natalie Aston.
• The Garnet grabbed a 9-8 lead on a Chloe Mayhue kill, but the Blue Jays responded with an 11-1 run that turned the one-point deficit into nine-point lead (19-10); the last six of the points came with freshman
Evelyn Batista at the service line for the Blue Jays.
• After splitting four points to make it 21-12, the Blue Jays scored the last four points of the set with Aston closing it out with a service ace.
SET TWO
• Unlike in set one, the Blue Jays led from start to finish in set two and cruised to a 25-14 victory. Batista picked up where she left off at the service line as she was on the line during the opening spree, which included an ace, an Anthony kill and two attack errors by the Garnet.
• The Garnet hung within several points into the middle of the set and held serve down 9-5 before a
Sydney Portale kill for the Blue Jays sparked a 10-2 spurt that pushed the Hopkins lead to 19-7.Â
Sarah Khan and
Roxy Karrer both served up aces during the run and
Elayna Williams added a pair of kills for the Blue Jays.
• Swarthmore got no closer than nine down the stretch and a kill from
Simone Bliss closed things out for the Blue Jays.
SET THREE
• As they had in set one, the Garnet got off to a quick start as they used an early 4-1 run to turn a 2-2 tie into a 6-3 lead with a Razdan kill capping the early surge for Swarthmore.
• The Garnet led through the early part of the set before the Blue Jays pulled even at 9-9 after
Danielle Norman kill was followed by an
Emma Dionne ace.
• Swarthmore answered with back-to-back points to go up 11-9 before a quick 5-0 run that included two kills from
Chidinma Onukwugha gave the Blue Jays a 14-11 lead they would never relinquish.
• Swarthmore got within two at 14-12 and 15-13, but the Blue Jays quickly pushed the lead out to 20-15 and Swarthmore was never closer than four down the stretch in what became a 25-19 match-closing set for the Blue Jays.
What it Means
• Johns Hopkins' 45-match winning streak is the fourth-longest winning streak in Division III history.
• The Blue Jays have won 45 consecutive sets against Centennial Conference opponents dating back to October 27, 2018, when they dropped the fifth set in a five-set loss at Franklin & Marshall.
