The Short Story: Senior
Liam Creedon scored the game's only goal in the 50
th minute to lead the 22
nd-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over host Haverford Saturday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
• Hopkins had a trio of great chances in the first half, beginning with a header by freshman
Jonathan Cui, who's header from inside the six was blocked out of bounds in the 12
th minute. Junior
Axel Whamond played a great through ball to his younger brother,
Ian, who fired a shot to the far post but it was just knocked away by Dylan Ioffreda. Just six minutes later, graduate student
Nate Charendoff had a shot to the lower right corner of the Fords' goal, but Ioffreda was just able to snag it.
• The Blue Jays finally got on the board in the 50
th minute on a quick transition from defense to offense. Senior
Tim Treinen sent a long ball to
Axel Whamond down the left side. He beat his defender, and then cut back and crossed the ball into the box. Creedon ran onto the ball and volleyed it off the goalie's hands and into the side netting.
• Hopkins nearly had a two-goal lead less than a minute later when
Axel Whamond beat Ioffreda, but his shot rang off the back post. The ball ricocheted right to freshman
Logan Falzarano, but he was unable to beat the Fords' keeper.
• Haverford stepped up its pressure after that with all nine of its second-half shots coming in the final 37 minutes. But the Fords were unable to get one past graduate student
Xander LeFevre.
