The Short Story:Â
The second-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team got a goal in the last two minutes of regulation from senior Rachel Jackson to break a scoreless tie and lift the Blue Jays to a 1-0 victory at Haverford Saturday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
•Â
1stÂ
Half
• Neither team touched the back of the net as the opening 45 minutes ended scoreless. The Blue Jays held a 9-7 advantage in shots and generated six corners to just one for the Fords in the first half, but Haverford goalie Hannah Friedrich and her Hopkins counterpart,
Caitlin Hendricks, were up the task and kept the game scoreless.
Â
•Â
2ndÂ
Half
• Despite a consistent level of pressure that resulted in nine second-half JHU corners, Friedrich and the Ford defense kept the game scoreless until the closing minutes, when the Blue Jays turned to their two most dangerous players to pull out the win.
• Freshman
Katie Sullivan controlled a loose ball just inside midfield and found senior
Rachel Jackson on a diagonal run just outside the area.
• Jackson collected the pace in stride and drew Friedrich off her line before slotting a ball just inside the far post to give the Blue Jays what proved to be the only goal of the game. The goal came with 1:41 remaining in regulation and the Fords couldn't solve Hendricks down the stretch.
What it Means
• Johns Hopkins runs its season-opening unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1) and the Blue Jays improve to 3-0 in the Centennial Conference.
Â
• The Blue Jays improve to 24-7-5 all-time against Haverford.   JHU is now unbeaten in its last 10 against the Fords (8-0-2).
