The Short Story:Â In
Dan Weiler's first official game since taking over as JHU head coach in February, 2020, the Blue Jays got an early goal from
Katie Sullivan to earn a 1-0 victory over the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets in the 2021 season opener.
Â
How it Happened
•
1st Half
Johns Hopkins controlled the tempo, and the midfield, for much of Saturday afternoon's contest, ultimately dominating possession and number of chances. After an early chance from
Callie Jones was saved by keeper Abby Cook in the 10
th minute, the Jays continued the pressure, getting
Katie Sullivan free in the 24
th minute. Sullivan turned open on the near sideline and played a big touch to create separation. The freshman then ripped a left-footed shot from just over 15 yards out and snuck it in on the top shelf over the outstretched hands of Cook. After subbing on in the 24
th minute,
Sophia Stone got a clean look in the 26
th minute, sending a howler at net. Cook was just able to get a hand on the ball and punch it over the crossbar. The Jays had another great look in the 38
th minute as
Emma Billings ran onto one and ripped it just off the crossbar.
•
2nd Half
The second half was much of the same for JHU defensively.
Ava Neijna,
Bonnie Shea,
Laurel Buck,
Sammy Murrell and
Sophia Stone rotated as the back four for the entirety of the game and never gave the Yellow Jackets any room to breathe. Randolph-Macon got its only real threatening look of the contest in the 47
th minute as Sammie Hoefs got a head to the ball, but it was comfortably handled by
Caitlin Hendricks. In the 49
th minute,
Abigail Gerdes tried to put another one on the board for Hopkins, but Zoe Long made a nice save on the near post.
Rachel Jackson got her best look of the contest in the 59
th minute, but didn't put enough on it to get it past Long. The defense continued to dominate the rest of the way, not allowing a shot in the final 40 minutes.
What it Means
• The Blue Jays start 1-0 in the
Dan Weiler era. Weiler was named head coach on February 19, 2020, going over a year and a half without a result.
