The Short Story:Â The Blue Jays dominated from start to finish in Sunday night's finale of the JHU Women's Soccer Invitational. The Blue Jays were named tournament champions with a 2-0 record for the weekend.
Â
How it Happened
•Â
1st Half
The Blue Jays opened up the scoring in the 12
th minute, once again getting a strong rip from freshman
Katie Sullivan.
Ava Neijna pushed the ball up the wing on the far side. Neijna sent the ball inside through the legs of
Lilah Isenberg and into the feet of Sullivan. Sullivan took on her defender, created space to her left and pummeled the ball with her left foot, floating into the back of the net over the hands of Allison Nork. The Jays nearly got
Rachel Jackson free in the 24
th minute as the senior got around the defense, but with the keeper charging out, Jackson pushed it left of net. Jackson got another great look in the 28
th minute, but Nork was able to make a sliding save to keep the senior off the score sheet. Moments later, Hopkins struck for a second time. In the 30
th minute,
Callie Jones got a gift at her feet off of a corner kick that she neatly deposited into the back of the net for her first career goal. Using every last second of the first half clock, Hopkins put up a third goal nearly at the buzzer.
Alanna Craig sent a cross in with time ticking down. The ball was deflected out to a defender's feet before a failed clearance resulted in a last-second goal from freshman
Katia Chiampas. The goal was also the first of Chiampas' career.
•Â
2nd Half
The Blue Jay defense continued its dominance, adding another 45 scoreless minutes to their season-opening total. With a three goal lead, Weiler got some extra contributors on the backline.
Elle Marine and
Caroline Bates joined the group from yesterday's performance and pitched in on a second consecutive shutout. Neijna added one for good luck in the 57
th minute. Taking a free kick, the junior sent it quickly out wide to
Amaya Ellis. Ellis dished it right back and Neijna ripped one from about 15 yards out, finding the back of the net.

Â
Inside the Box Score
•Â
Katie Sullivan scored her second career goal in just her second career game. She is the first freshman player to score in her first two contests since Hannah Kronick in 2011.
• Chiampas, Jones and Neijna each scored the first goal of their careers. With a missed 2020 season and a lot of new blood, there will be many firsts to come from the Jays in 2021.
• Johns Hopkins hasn't lost at home since the 2018 NCAA Tournament against Misericordia. The Blue Jays are now 8-0-1 at Homewood Field during that stretch.
Â
Up Next
• The Blue Jays will remain at home, hosting top-ranked Messiah on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on Homewood Field.
