How it Happened
In its first game action in over a month, Johns Hopkins outscored Dickinson 13-6 in the five-minute overtime period to earn a hard fought 66-59 Centennial Conference victory.
Erin Walsh had a career game, scoring 16 points and grabbing nine boards to lead the undermanned Jays.Â
Hopkins led the contest by a score of 53-50 with 10 seconds left after
Halie Egan split a pair of free throws with 10Â seconds left. The Red Devils called timeout and got a clean look in the corner with Caitlin Blackman tying the game at 53 after knocking down a three with 7.8 seconds remaining. The Jays were unable to get a shot off, sending the game to OT.Â
Dickinson took the lead 15 seconds into the extra period as Clair Marion knocked down the jumper. The Jays responded with six straight points, getting two buckets from Walsh and one from
Greta Miller. Miller's bucket was her first since the first quarter and gave Hopkins a 57-55 lead with 3:57 to go. They would not relinquish that lead. Blackman hit a jumper to cut the deficit to two with 1:27 to go, but
Sophie deBettencourt hit a pair of clutch free throws with 1:02 to play, pushing the lead to 61-57.
Emily Howie knocked down a pair of free throws on the next possession and
Diarra Oden finished a fastbreak layup with 31 seconds to play, giving JHU a 64-57 lead. Both teams traded a pair of free throws and the Jays escaped with a seven-point overtime win in an empty Goldfarb Gymnasium.Â
JHU led by as many as 11 early in the contest, as they used a 9-2 run to end the first period. Tied 6-6, Howie hit a triple to put the Jays ahead for the first time in the quarter. Egan put back a
Natalie Mann miss followed by a bucket from Miller to give the Jays a quick 7-0 run and a 13-6 lead with 3:31 to go in the first. Marion hit a three for the Red Devils to end that run, but the aforementioned 9-2 run began with a beautiful find from Howie to get
Kristin Ralston on the board with 1:54 remaining. With 34 seconds left in the quarter Walsh found Mann inside for a strong finish plus the foul and the Jays lead was 20-9. Both teams scored a bucket in the final 30, making it a 22-11 score at the end of one.Â
Dickinson roared back in the second, outscoring JHU 18-8. The Red Devils used a 9-0 run in the first three minutes of the period to quickly cut the deficit to one. Walsh kept the Red Devils at bay, scoring the next six Blue Jay points over a span of almost 2:30, hitting a turnaround jumper with 4:39 left in the half to give Hopkins a five-point lead. Kate Montgomery hit a jumper with 1:39 to play in the half, tying the contest at 28. The Red Devils retook their first lead since 6-4 as Kayla Rose knocked down a free throw, but Oden got her first bucket of the game to fall with four seconds remaining in the half, sending Hopkins to the locker room with a 31-30 lead.Â
After falling behind briefly in the third,
Emily Howie hit a triple with 6:06 to play in the quarter to give JHU a 37-34 lead. Walsh and Oden followed with buckets and the Jays lead was quickly seven after a 9-0 run. The Red Devils fought back again, cutting the deficit to two with a Montgomery free throw just before the end of the third quarter clock.Â
The Jays led it by three after another bucket from Walsh with 4:47 left in regulation, but Marion drilled a three to tie the contest at 48 just 23 seconds later. Blackman put the Red Devils on top, but Oden tied it at 50 with 2:36 to go. Oden scored again with 1:24 left to put the Jays ahead before the final sequence resulted in the OT period.Â
