Mehra's Five Points Lead Hopkins To 5-0 Win Over Haverford

BALTIMORE, MD – The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team got five points from junior Gen Mehra in a 5-0 win over Haverford Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

Senior Sadie Abboud opened the scoring just 3:27 into the game with what turned out to be the game-winner. Graduate student Abby Birk collected her own rebound off a Mary Smith save and slipped a pass from the endline to Abboud in the middle of the circle. Abboud one-timed the pass into the middle of the Fords' goal.

Hopkins pushed its lead to two with just 1:48 to play in the opening quarter. Off a Birk corner insert, senior Olivia Fox hit a hard shot from the top of the circle. Mehra tipped the shot up and over Smith to make it 2-0 Blue Jays.

After a scoreless second quarter, Hopkins got two in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Mehra intercepted a Fords' pass deep in their end, took several touches and then threaded a pass to freshman Grace Waldeck in the middle of the circle. Waldeck settled the pass and then fired a shot inside the right post just 70 seconds into the quarter. Just over five minutes later, it was Mehra on the receiving end. Off another Blue Jay corner, Abboud dribbled along the right side of the circle and then found Mehra in the center of the circle, and she redirected the ball past Smith. Hopkins closed out the scoring with 4:46 to play when Birk converted a penalty stroke.

Freshman Phoebe Williams, senior Morgan Seward and junior Alexis Loder combined for the shutout without having to make a save. Smith finished with six saves in the cage for the Fords. Hopkins had advantages in shots (24-3) and corners (15-3).

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 5 as the Blue Jays host the Gettysburg Bullets. The Centennial Conference contest is slated for a 4:00 pm start.

Notes: Hopkins improves to 34-9-1 all-time against Haverford and has won six straight in the series • The six previous meetings had all been decided by just one goal.
