BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins University wrestling coachÂ
Keith Norris announced today that graduate student
Joe Paul and seniors
Brent Lorin and
Colin Vallis have been named captains for the upcoming 2022-2023 season. This is the second consecutive year that Paul will serve as a captain, while the selection is the first for Lorin and Vallis.
Â
Paul, the defending Centennial Conference Champion at 174 pounds, posted a 35-9 record last season and enters his final season with a career record of 71-45. His 35 wins last season were one shy of the Johns Hopkins single season record while he set a school record with nine wins by technical fall a year ago. Among his 71 career wins are 32 that have earned bonus points as he has nine major decisions, 10 technical falls and 13 pins to his credit. Paul is a three-time NWCA Scholar All-American.
Â
Lorin posted a 23-15 record last season with a majority of his action coming at 125 pounds. He bumped up to 133 pounds late in the season and made a stunning run to the Centennial Conference title at 133 as he scored a 17-7 major decision victory against top-seeded Luke Kowalski of Gettysburg in the semifinals and then pinned third-seeded Romeo Rodriguez in the final to claim his conference title. He is 43-26 in his career with 24 bonus-point wins, including 16 pins, to his credit.
Â
Vallis missed his freshman year with an injury, lost his sophomore year when the COVID pandemic canceled the 2020-21 season and wrestled in 16 matches at 174 pounds last season. He finished the 2021-22 season with a 5-11 record and all five of his wins were of the bonus point variety as he counted four pins and one technical fall to his credit.
Â
Johns Hopkins will open the 2022-23 season on Saturday, November 5 at the Messiah Invitational.
