BALTIMORE, MD – The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals to beat visiting Ursinus, 2-0, on Saturday night in Centennial Conference action.
Sophomore
Ian Whamond almost broke through for the Blue Jays in the 48
th minute on a rocket from 25 yards out, but a diving Kirk Ransome made the save near the right post. Sophomore defender
Diego Elias picked a great time score his first career goal as he got Hopkins on the board in the 60
th minute. Whamond corralled a loose ball near the top of the box and dropped a short pass to Elias. He side-stepped a defender and then slotted a shot through traffic and into the bottom left corner.
Just two minutes later, junior
Aidan Dunphy had a good look off a header in tight, but Ransome made the save. Junior
Tyler White nearly picked the far post from the top right corner of the box in the 66
th minute, but again Ransome was able to turn it aside. Whamond had back-to-back chances in the 72
nd and 75
th minutes, however both shots missed just wide. The Blue Jays finally got the insurance goal in the 82
nd minute. Dunphy spun on his defender and then sprung graduate student
Andres Chacon in the box with a nice through pass. Chacon dribbled to his right and then fired a right-footed shot under the crossbar for his first career goal.
Graduate student
Alex Morgret made a pair of saves in nearly 86 minutes of action before giving way to junior
Drew Valsamedis. Ransome finished with seven saves in the loss for the Bears. Hopkins had advantages in shots (21-2) and corners (10-0).
Hopkins is back in action on Wednesday, October 19 as the Blue Jays host Dickinson. The Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
