Johns Hopkins and Dickinson Battle to 1-1 Draw

BALTIMORE, MD – The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team battled visiting Dickinson to a 1-1 draw in Centennial Conference action Wednesday night at Homewood Field.

Junior Tyler White looked like he was going to give Hopkins a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute, but a diving one-handed stop by Nick Potter kept the game scoreless. A little over two minutes later, Potter made a save on a free kick from junior Aidan Dunphy. And in the 38th minute, freshman Giulian Laudisa ripped a shot from 10 yards out that just missed the top left corner.

Hopkins finally broke through in the 51st minute after freshman Will Andrus earned a free kick 29 yards out. Sophomore Ian Whamond took the kick and sent the ball towards the left post where his brother Axel volleyed the ball past Potter with the outside of his right foot.

Dickinson's Jackson Wolf took a shot from the top of the box in the 55th minute that skipped just wide of the right post. The Red Devils then drew level in the 72nd minute. After a Dickinson corner, the defense cleared the ball out of the box. Luke Beiles collected the clear and chipped the ball back into the box, where Tyson Burling headed inside the left post from 10 yards out.

Beiles had a good look at the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute, but graduate student Alex Morgret knocked it down and then batted it away to keep the game tied. Hopkins made one last push in the final two minutes and graduate student Mike Burch looked like he'd won it in the 90th minute. He took a pass from Dunphy and ripped a shot that beat Potter but hit off the crossbar in the waning seconds.

Hopkins had advantages in shots (22-4) and corners (7-5). Morgret finished with one save while Potter made eight for the Red Devils.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 22 as the Blue Jays travel to Muhlenberg. The Centennial Conference tilt is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.

Notes: Hopkins is now tied for first in the Centennial Conference with Franklin & Marshall • The Blue Jays and the Diplomats have 17 points each with identical 5-0-2 records • The two will meet in the regular season finale on October 29.
