Johns Hopkins Bests William & Mary, 151-111

WILLIAMSBURG, VA – The Johns Hopkins men's swim team picked up another win over a Division I opponent on Saturday as the Blue Jays beat the host William & Mary Tribe, 151-111. The Blue Jays won 10 of the 14 events to take the win.
 
"That was an electric meet and we walked out with several event wins," said head coach Scott Armstrong. "A special congrats to Bryce Lloyd and Avery Clapp with their first event wins as Blue Jays and our seniors coming through huge. Kyle Wu continues to dominate in his senior year and the rest of the senior class is showing the guys how to tackle a tough dual meet. Two more weeks of hard work and then we will see how we can stack up in a prelims-finals invitational format!"
 
Hopkins opened the meet with second and fourth-place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of freshman Bryce Lloyd, senior Kyle Wu, freshman Avery Clapp and Christian Mayr swam a 1:33.47 for second. Seniors Steven Rua and Spencer Ryan, junior Reef Ide and freshman Shawn Zhou took fourth in 1:35.15.
 
Junior Kellen Roddy then won the 1000 Free as he beat the field with a 9:33.68. Freshman Matthew Hartshorn placed third with a time of 9:53.14 and sophomore Jonik Surprenant finished fourth in 9:59.69. The Blue Jays then went one-two in the 200 Free, led by sophomore Eric Ji with a winning time of 1:44.40. His classmate Daniel Byrnes followed just eight-hundredths of a second later for second. Sophomore Joe Castagno placed fourth with a time of 1:47.90.
 
Lloyd took second in the 100 Back as he clocked in at 52.23. Wu then won the 100 Breast as he touched in 55.77, beating W&M's Brock Rempe by more than a second and a half. Junior Justin Limberg placed fourth in 58.66. Clapp finished second in the 200 Fly with a 1:53.44, while freshman Andrew Huang took third in 1:54.26.
 
Ryan took second in the 50 Free with a time of 21.54 while Zhou placed fourth in 21.93. Wu followed with his second win of the afternoon, taking the top spot in the 100 Free in 46.20. Mayr followed in third place as he touched in 48.12. Lloyd then earned a win in the 200 Back as he beat the field by three and a half seconds. He touched in 1:52.15.
 
Hopkins followed with a one-two finish in the 200 Breast. Senior Brandon Stride grabbed the win in 2:07.92. Hartshorn placed second with a time of 2:08.24. Huang also took fourth in the event as he finished in 2:10.36. Roddy picked up his second win of the meet as he clocked in at 4:37.56 in the 500 Free. Byrnes finished in second place with a time of 4:45.91 while Surprenant placed fourth in 4:46.98. Clapp made it another win for the Blue Jays as he took first in the 100 Fly with a time of 50.16, beating Ashton Temme by nearly a second. Lloyd earned his second win as he clocked in at 1:55.15 in the 200 IM. Sophomore Nathan Jin claimed third in 1:59.20.
 
Hopkins wrapped up the win with first and fourth-place finishes in the 200 Free Relay. Wu, Mayr, Zhou and Ryan took the win with a time of 1:24.74. Junior Jay Heymann, Ide, Jin and Rua took fourth place in 1:28.10.
 
The Blue Jays return to the pool in two weeks for the annual Thomas Murphy Invitational. The meet is scheduled for October 28-30 at nearby Loyola University.
