Blue Jays Drop Two on the Road

BRONX, NY – The Johns Hopkins water polo dropped a pair of MAWPC games on the road Saturday. Hopkins lost to Wagner, 17-6, and then fell to host Fordham, 23-9, in the nightcap.

The Seahawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter. Sophomore Ian Raley got the Blue Jays on the board just 28 seconds into the second. Mattia Bognolo answered for Wagner 18 seconds later. Freshman Daniel Palfi got one back for Hopkins and it was a 6-2 game with 6:12 to play in the quarter. The Seahawks responded with five straight to take an 11-2 lead. Raley ended the run with his second of the quarter at the 1:07-mark and Wagner took an 11-3 lead into the half.

The Seahawks came out of the half and picked up right where they left off, scoring five unanswered to push out to a 16-3 lead. Graduate student Emerson Sullivan halted the run with a five-meter goal at 1:36 and junior Liam Housenbold followed with a six-on-five goal to make it 16-5 after three. Each team got a goal in the fourth quarter to account for the 17-6 final.

In the nightcap, the host Rams scored seven straight to open the contest. Junior Cameron Burns sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from Lucas Nieto Jasny and it was 8-2 with 5:26 to play in the second. Balazs Berenyi answered for Fordham, but a Raley goal made it a 9-3 game at 3:13. The Rams answered with two goals in the final two and a half minutes to go up 11-3 at the half.

Fordham scored three straight to open the third and extend its lead to 14-3. Sullivan and senior Kami Eslami ended the run with back-to-back goals. Nacho Ariste answered with a pair for the Rams to stake the home team to a 16-5 lead. Junior Paul Gensbigler scored twice in a 29-second span, but a Nir Gross goal in the final 35 seconds made it a 17-7 game after three. The teams traded two-goal spurts in the fourth quarter as Fordham took the 23-9 win.
