Johns Hopkins Shuts Out #18 Franklin & Marshall

LANCASTER, PA – The seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team beat 18th-ranked Franklin & Marshall, 3-0, on Wednesday night in a meeting of the last two unbeaten teams in the Centennial Conference.

Senior Siena Urbanski gave the Blue Jays the early lead with what turned out to be the game-winner just 6:42 into the first. Graduate student Abby Birk lifted the ball into the circle, where it was knocked down by a defender. Urbanski collected the loose ball at the top of the circle and fired a reverse shot into the left side of the goal.

Hopkins pushed its lead two just before the half when a scramble ensued in front of the cage off a Blue Jay corner. Junior Gen Mehra pounced on the rebound and poked it past Sydney Lipe with just 1:03 to go in the half. Sophomore Grace Nockolds made it a three-goal game just 4:32 into the fourth quarter. Junior Emily Knight lifted a ball from the sideline to sophomore Liz Falterer in the middle of the field. Falterer sent the ball into the circle and Birk pushed it through the defense to Nockolds, who one-timed a shot under a charging Lipe.

JHU had a 9-0 advantage in shots and a 3-0 advantage in corners. Junior Alexis Loder and freshman Phoebe Williams combined for the shutout without having to make a save. Lipe finished with three saves for the Diplomats.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, Octogber 26 when Washington College visits Homewood Field. The Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.

Notes: Birk, the program's all-time assist leader, notched the 40th assist of her career • Hopkins pushed its win streak to nine and now sits alone in first place in the conference with two games to play • Franklin & Marshall was held without a shot for the first time since at least 2004.
