Blue Jays Fall in Four at Stevenson

Mustangs Grab Four-Set Victory in Local Rivalry

OWINGS MILLS, MD – The Stevenson volleyball team knocked off visiting Johns Hopkins, 3-1, in non-conference volleyball action Friday evening in the Owings Mills Gym.  The Mustangs improve to 18-2 on the year with their 10th win in their last 11 outings, while the Blue Jays had a three-match winning streak snapped and fall to 9-7.
 
The Blue Jays trailed 13-12 in set one before the Mustangs scored 12 of the final 16 points to grab a 25-16 set-one win.  Haley Hoover fueled the late run for Stevenson with two kills and a service ace.  The Mustangs trailed by a point early in set two, but sprinted out to a 5-1 lead and never let the Blue Jays pull even before taking the set 25-18.
 
The Blue Jays took control in the middle of the third set as they turned a 9-8 lead into a 21-11 margin with a 12-3 run.  Chidinma Onukwugha had three kills, Roxy Karrer had two and Danielle Norman served up three straight aces to fuel the run for the Blue Jays.  Shannon Baily then served up six straight points for the Mustangs, who closed to within 23-20 on a Sarah Straub kill before the Blue Jays closed it out on an Eloise Estrada kill.
 
The Mustangs made sure there would not be a fifth set as they sprinted out to a 7-2 lead early in the fourth and never let the Blue Jays get closer than four before closing things with a 25-14 set-four victory.
 
Straub led a balanced offensive attack for the Mustangs with nine kills, while Baily, Rileigh Kimball and Giulia Viglietta all added eight. Stevenson got 20 assists from Makala Thompson and Kayla Vaeth added a match-high 16 digs.
 
Onukwugha had a match-high 13 kills for Johns Hopkins, while Karrer added 10 to go along with 12 digs.  Helena Swaak had a match-high 32 assists, but the Blue Jays hit just .135 on 148 attack attempts in the loss.
 
What's Next
Johns Hopkins will make a quick turnaround as the Blue Jays will play at Ursinus (1 pm) and Bryn Mawr (5 pm) on Saturday.
