BALTIMORE, MD – The 19
th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer prevailed in a shootout, 4-2, over Dickinson in the Centennial Conference Quarterfinals Tuesday night. The Blue Jays and Red Devils battled to a 2-2 through regulation and overtime.
Dickinson struck first, getting on the board in the 29
th minute. Chaz Smith corralled a loose ball and then sent a long pass to Saul Iwowo. He split the defenders and then chipped the ball over a charging
Alex Morgret to put the Red Devils ahead. Less than two minutes later, junior
Aidan Dunphy was fouled in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Junior
Francis Meyer took the kick and beat the six-foot-five Andrew Kempe to draw the Blue Jays' level.
Just 70 seconds at scoring the game-tying goal, Meyer nearly put Hopkins ahead. He dribbled into the box and then fired a laser towards the back post, but it just missed wide. Johnny Diederich had a good look in the 37
th minute off a Red Devils' corner kick, but Morgret was there to make the save. Freshman
Jackson Shapiro volleyed a rebound just over the Dickinson goal in the waning seconds to send the teams into the half knotted at one.
The Blue Jays had a couple of quick chances in the 57
th minute, but couldn't convert. They would get the go-ahead goal just 80 seconds later. Sophomore
Ian Whamond played the ball towards the endline to senior
Axel Whamond. He dropped the ball back to sophomore
Jonathan Cui and he one-timed a shot from 15 yards out inside the right post.
Morgret made a diving save on Tyson Burling in the 83
rd minute to keep the Blue Jays on top, but less than 90 seconds later, it was tie game. Iwowo controlled a 50-50 ball, dribbled deep into the Hopkins' box and then scored from a tough angle to draw Dickinson level.
Hopkins had three corners in the final minute, but could not capitalize and the teams headed to overtime. In the shootout, both teams missed their first kicks. The Blue Jays then made four straight to win the shootout 4-2. Junior
Tyler White made the winning penalty kick on the Blue Jays' fifth attempt.
Morgret finished with five saves while Kempe made nine for the Red Devils. Hopkins outshot Dickinson, 26-11, and had a 13-3 advantage in corners.
Hopkins advances to the Centennial Conference semifinals at second-seeded Washington College. The game is slated for a 7:00 pm start on Friday at Roy Kirby Jr., Stadium.
