CHESTERTOWN, MD – The 19
th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team beat host and second-seeded Washington College, 1-0, on Friday night in the Centennial Conference Semifinals. The win is also the 200
th in the career of Blue Jay head coach
Craig Appleby.
Hopkins controlled most of the play but it took until the 76
th minute before the Blue Jays could get on the board. Sophomore
Ian Whamond eluded one defender and dribbled into the box before having his feet taken out from under him. Whamond then took the kick from the spot and beat Shoremen goalie Anthony Pinto to stake JHU to the 1-0 lead.
Senior
Axel Whamond nearly gave Hopkins an insurance goal in the 83
rd minute. He drew Pinto out of the goal and slipped a shot past him from about 12 yards out. But Ryan Sharpley cleared the ball off the line to keep it a one-goal game.
Graduate student
Alex Morgret finished with one save in posting his 11
th shutout of the season. Pinto made four saves in the loss for the Shoremen. Hopkins had the advantage in shots (15-3) while corners were even at four apiece.
Hopkins will now host the Centennial Conference Championship after Muhlenberg defeated top-seeded Franklin & Marshall on Friday. The title game is slated for a 3:00 pm start at Homewood Field on Sunday, November 6.
Notes: Hopkins is making its ninth CC Championship game appearance and first since 2019 • JHU and Muhlenberg last met in the tournament in 2007.
