Johns Hopkins Falls to GW and Navy at MAWPC Championship

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRONX, NY – The Johns Hopkins water polo team fell to second-seeded George Washington and sixth-seeded Navy at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championship and will now play in the seventh-place game.
 
The Blue Jays fell to the Colonials, 15-5, on Friday night. GW jumped out to a four-goal lead before an Emerson Sullivan goal got JHU on the board at the 5:53-mark in the second. The Colonials answered with five straight goals to take a 9-1 lead into the half.
 
Cameron Burns and Ian Raley sandwiched goals around a strike from GW's Mateus Stellet and it was 10-3 with 4:09 left in the third. The Colonials then rattled off three in a row and led 13-3 after three. Sullivan opened the fourth quarter with a goal, but Finn Lillis answered for GW and it was 14-4. Mark Poisler scored on a five-meter shot with 1:59 to play, but Ford Bruggen closed out the game just 57 seconds later with another for the Colonials.
 
Saturday afternoon, Navy scored four goals in overtime to beat Hopkins, 15-11. With the game tied at one early, Dado Soares and Sullivan scored back-to-back goals to stake the Blue Jays to a 3-1 lead. The Mids answered however with two scores in the final three minutes to make it a 3-3 game at the quarter break.
 
Kami Eslami scored to open the second quarter and put Hopkins back on top, but Navy responded with three in a row to grab a 6-4 lead at the half. Sullivan scored an early five-meter in the third to pull the Blue Jays back within one. Jake Altmayer answered to push Navy's lead to 7-5. Sullivan came right back and sparked a three-goal spurt that saw JHU grab an 8-7 lead with 3:01 to play in the third.
 
Tommy McKnew tied the game at eight with a man-up goal at 2:22, but Raley answered with 48 ticks on the clock and Hopkins led 9-8 after three. The teams traded goals over the first five and a half minutes of the quarter and it was 11-9 Blue Jays. Chris King and Rory Begin scored in the final 2:22 to tie the game and force overtime. The Mids would score four unanswered in overtime to take the win.
 
Hopkins will now take on McKendree in the seventh-place game on Sunday, November 20 at 10:30 am.
 
Notes: Sullivan needs six goals to tie the single-season record of 112, held by Ross Schofield • Sullivan's 131 points this season are the third most in program history • Soares' 51 assists this season are ninth most in program history.
